I thought the "grandfathered" part of unlimited data was simply still being able to get unlimited data for a fixed price. They don't even sell unlimited accounts any longer, do they?

Well, now they've blocked FoxFi to boot it seems.

Went back to my NoteII since it has root.

Stop watching so much porn. Jesus I have 20gb for three lines and hardly go over 5gb as a family.

how? SPLAIN PLEASE

Under contract through August 16. 20% discount on main portion of family plan and data package on my line.

That said, it will finally push us over $100/mo so we may investigate alternate options at that time.

Cricket looks nice, but they don't support the Moto G 3rd generation. Bummer! I'd use them if they allowed that phone.

I did a lot of reading up on this when the price hike was first announced. There are folks who say they use 300+ GB -- running their entire home network off the hotspot. One person on Reddit (yeah, I know) claimed to hit up to 700 GB sometimes.

Foxfi quit for me on Friday. I'm looking for a replacement. Until I find something I'll be dragging my MiFi hotspot with me to work for my tablet.

Country folk with no wires from the city either get satellite or cellular data. Last I knew satellite was slower and had data/speed caps.

Indeed. Lived in SoCal for most of my life. Everywhere out there HSI was basically a given, and constantly being upgraded since broadband began.

Moved to the midwest in 2013. Lived in Indiana in a small subdivision about 20 min from Louisville. It was either "up to" 6mbps/784kbps dsl with a 150gb cap and like $60/mo, or $80 for 10gb satellite.

Moved to Wisconsin last month. Same deal, and I'm even in a township/village. Best they offer is 6mbps/784kbps dsl for $60.

I get 80mbps/30mbps+ on my phone, and it's cheaper. That's faster than my 75/25 Fios I had before leaving L.A. What would you use?

AT&T recently tricked my 65 year old dad into cancelling his $30/mo unlimited plan. An AT&T rep told him that he could save him money by changing plans and that he'd still have unlimited data with the new plan. They moved him to a 2GB/mo plan for $20 with $15 per additional GB. He uses about 15-20GB a month and now has data bills over $200/month.

They refuse to switch him back to his unlimited plan because the rep technically didn't lie (the $20 2GB plan is cheaper than the $30 GB unlimited plan and he can use unlimited data if he pays extra).

He's looking into switching to another provider, but AT&T is the only provider that has good coverage in the rural areas he works in.

Pisses me off.

But when you go past your set allotment you have 2G speed. How do you have more GBs than you are given?

I'm new to smart phones. I have a flip phone right now and plan on buying a smartphone soon.

How in the hell can that AT&T rep look themselves in the mirror after pulling this shit!

Some services have "unlimited" high speed, where it allegedly only throttles to ease congestion. I've never had a smart phone plan. Mine's provided by work, and I try not to abuse it. I've never been throttled that I can tell, but it's Sprint, so I'm not sure I'd notice :^D

That's actually fraud and potentially elder abuse, depending on the laws of the state where your dad is. A letter threatening such (probably from a lawyer) would likely get AT&T to reverse its position.

Maybe in PA, but in Phoenix and in the NYC area it's fine.

It does suck in rural areas, though.

T-Mobile sucks in Connecticut once you get more than 5 miles away from the I-95 corridor. It's pretty sad.

I have straight talk, so I'm paying $45 a month an "unlimited" plan with a 5 GB cap before they throttle you. I started with a T-Mobile SIM, but switched to an AT&T SIM. AT&T's coverage around here is decent.
