Woot. I was able to skip the $20 increase/mo for at least a couple years. Got back on contract, got a Note 5 for $50 which I'll sell for $400+. And I broke my own data record last month, suck that Verizon.

Yea it was a problem with FoxFi, and was down for several days apparently.

So, how did you do this? I've been off contract for 4 years now and just buy my phones off ebay, etc. But I'd do a new 2 yr contract if I could eliminate the 20/mo fee. I thought as soon as you re-sign on a contract, they take away the unlimited data...

This is my 4th upgrade at the discount price and keeping unlimited. They made it way more of a PITA since last month, but it's still doable.

The easiest method is just using your upgrade through a 3rd party retailer such as best buy, and then you MUST destroy the SIM card it comes with, and you cannot use that phone on your line. Activating the new SIM or using the phone on the UDP line you upgraded, will switch off unlimited. Prior to last month, all you had to do was remove the new SIM, and then you could use your new phone on the UDP line and keep unlimited.

Now to use the new phone on the UDP line, you have to jump through some hoops detailed in the SD thread.

It also remains to be seen if once you've been hit with the $20/mo increase, if getting back on contract will reverse it. I never got hit with the increase before renewing my contract.

At least you can use an upgrade to get a new phone at discount, and then sell it to recoup the cost increase.

I believe once the contract expires the price will increase and I would bet large sums of money there is no way to go back.

After reading the SD thread, it looks risky now. Also makes me wonder if I buy a phone off ebay that was bought from BB to do this deal, if it will screw my UD or if the phones ID are tied to the UDP they were bought under.

No, it's tied only to the line that did the upgrade. You can use any phone other than the one you got in the upgrade and keep your unlimited.

If you're really concerned about using a ebay phone etc., you can upgrade, sell the phone, and buy a retail phone. I couldn't give a damn less about a new phone, just wanted to get back on contract.

They're very responsive in that SD thread to any questions you may have.

Thanks, good info... my phone is getting old. Nokia 822. Still looks and runs fine but it won't last forever and I want another WP, preferably a Nokia with a really good camera since I use it pretty much everyday. So, maybe a 735 since they are pretty cheap on ebay. I don't think Verizon is going to carry any high end WP from what I've heard.

I don't understand how anyone uses even 20 gigs.

I think I put like 70mb on my data per month...and that is primarily stupid background updates that I thought I turned off.

stupid phone.

you obviously 1 don't stream anything (music, vids, whatever) or 2) are on wifi 24/7

my 1 hour commute listening to streaming music uses ~800 megs

I think you added a extra 0 there.

I could watch a 720p video for a hour and use about that.

I just got a letter from AT&T that my unlimited data is going to go up $5 a month. This is bound to be babysteps towards an even higher increase.

Now, I need to look for a possible switch to another unlimited data plan. Since I have AT&T U-Verse, I will look to be moving off my U-450 package at the same time. With how much I spend on Cellphone, Home Phone, Internet and Cable, I can look to take my $6k a year business elsewhere.

Been with AT&T for eons myself. Granfrathered. I once had the original ipad @ $25 month unlimited data.
Dropped that. What a fool I was. Still have unlimited cell phone data.
ATT has been sending out confusing promos to get people off grandfathered unlimited over to a measured data plan.
I did not take their bait.

Some months I reached 16 gb between streaming Sirius, YouTube and netflix.
So 25 gb is easy to do.
ATT did raise unlimited up $5 a month. I'm OK with that but no doubt just the tip of the iceberg.
Plus, now I figured out how to stream dish network so more data use there.
For my $5.

I just look at all the cell phones out there. Everyone has a phone.
Just think of the money raked in, and how screwed the public has been.
I'd bet more folks have cell service than have home heating or indoor plumbing.

Gave up unlimited Verizon data b/c of the terrible voice reception i've had at the last two places I've lived (7 years & 5 years) and went with Google Project Fi. Haven't looked back!

And, cut my already discounted bill by $20/ month.

A hour long youtube video or so at 720p is around that for a lot of them.

There is no way that it's that much. I regularly upload 1080p videos to youtube that run 90 to 120 minutes or more and the total filesize is typically around 6 GB.

Unlimited data on a cell for only 50/mo? That is a pretty awesome deal. That gets you maybe 1gig here.

But can't complain as my land internet is unlimited and that's where it really counts.

I got under contract before the $20 hike hit last October so I'm locked in til October 2017...

I never go over about 30gb a month though, typically 15-25gb a month.

I haven't read the thread but for clarity they and any carrier can throttle it any amount whenever they feel its needed.
Many people obsess over unlimited data but in reality 2-5 GB will easily cover 85+% of them.
Similar to home internet we all want 100mb connections or better but in reality 25mb is more than enough for the majority.
