Verizon may be taking away unlimited data?

Looks like from this article that starting this week Verizon will try to move people off contract with unlimited to their tiered data packages along with another 2 year contract.

They can't pry it from my hands and if they do I'll just sell my phones and go with an mvno.

It doesn't look like Verizon is ending unlimited plans to me, they are simply trying to get people to voluntarily move to tiered plans.

That being said, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Verizon end unlimited plans at some point.

still crappy compared to the $60 2GB loyalty program (which includes subsidized phones)

No it's not throttled or limited to 5gb. I've used over 5 at one point while traveling and one time I used 12gb. Only when I was in an area with absolutely no WiFi.

My bill is $83 bucks now with unlimited so paying over that to move to the 10gb package would cost me about $115 a month which to me isn't worth it.

At one point it will be taken away and that's when I will go too.

Well, where I live there is metro pcs, their coverage is actually good in my area. There is also aio wireless which runs off of att&t, straight talk, a few others too.

Nope. I typically use 7-8GBs a month with no throttling. I'll keep it until they pry it away and then I'll move to AT&T.

I think when they decide to take it they will just take it away from everyone regardless how much you use. Verizon store employees use the same amount since some of them still have unlimited. I've switched phones enough and they have been doing the same at my local store, buying phones used or off contract to keep unlimited.

AT&T's been the one throttling "unlimited" plans

3GB if you are on 3G, 5GB if you are on LTE. throttled speeds = between 0.1 - 0.5 mbits/s

The last of the unlimited data contracts will expire at the end of June. We'll see what Verizon decides to do after that.

LOL, as if congestion issue is due to unlimited data subscribers. Congestion issue can be solved with better and more robust infrastructure. Not throttled and tiered data.

Tier data is for maximum profit and handsome bonuses. They got you by the balls and there is nothing you can do about it once you are on tiered data.

if verizon only has 40mhz of bandwidth = theoretical 150mbps down, and you have 10 people streaming videos, you'll have to split that 150mbps by 10 = 15mbps each

if all of them have unlimited data and keep streaming videos at the same time, someone's going to have a bad experience

as you said, you can have more robust infrastructure... that's why Verizon is doing, deploying AWS LTE to certain areas. people with AWS-supported phones can use this less-crowded spectrum, but you're still spectrum-limited. if all the unlimited-plan people have AWS and start using it heavily, you'll have the same problem on the AWS band

Never. Actually plan to start using it for my home internet, best I can get at new house is "up to" 6mbps/784k with ATT dsl with a 150gb cap. Did a test with my phone yesterday and got 10mbps/2mbps.

I can use usb tether to my router and provide wifi to the whole house. May choose to pay the extra $30 for hotspot to be completely safe. Even with that I'll only be paying $100/mo for two smartphones and home internet after my employer's credit.

Nothing new here guys. Verizon, and AT&T, have been trying to migrate users off older Unlimited plans into their tiered plans since they launched them. With varying degrees of success.

That is because you have a contract until that date. My contract ended a year ago or so. Which makes me month to month. I don't think they can force people month to month to join a contract out of will. They are more likely to lose customers that way.

Taiwan is a perfect example of where you don't have data caps and tethering restrictions and their 3G is dog slow. I say this as a frequent traveler there. In terms of 3G deployment, they were fast and easy to roll out given the high population density. 4G unfortunately is lagging because they bet on WiMax and only completed LTE auctions last year. But that's a separate point.

You can throw 20+20 MHz LTE up in cities like New York and San Francisco, and when you remove bandwidth restrictions, people are going to go crazy. Your network will slow down like hell still.

Where's "here?" Here in the Bay Area, Verizon LTE speeds and reliability is nothing special.

I'm not going to give up my unlimited data unless they force me off or give me a plan that is close to it (Example would be 25gb a month for what I pay for data, 30 dollars, which will not happen)

I can go through upwards of 50 gbs in a month since this is my main source of internet until I go off to college.

Even when I do go off to college, I will use it to torrent things.

Even if you go to an mvno you will get unlimited but it will be throttled. At that point I dont care as it would only cost about 40 a Month for the service compared to $83 I'm paying now with Verizon.
