Does anybody know if OCZ has released a firmware to fix the problems on sandy bridge chipsets?

there is an update to 2.15 firmware now available to help with some of the underlying issues here.

Intel and mobo mgfgrs have also helped to alleviate the undelying issues from their end as well... and using the latest bios.. latest drivers.. latest SSD firmware is typically advised.

I have two Vertex 3 SSDs with 2.15 firmware attached to a Gigabyte Z68X-UD7-B3 (F8 BIOS) and it's been stable on both Windows 7 (using MS AHCI driver) and Linux.

thinking about getting vertex 3, but it will be my 3rd sata 3 drive when my motherboard only supports 2 sata3 devices. Will these or the corsair force series 3 drive be bottlenecked if I use them on usb3.0? Is there some sort of adapter to hook it up internally?

yes it would with easily compressed data.. but not nearly as much with incompressible data. This is because the Sandforce controller can hardly saturate the sata2 channel with incompressible data anyways. Reads will take the greatest hit since they are not affected by the incompressible data as much.

There are USB 3.0 to sata adapters.. but you would be better off with the internal sata2 ports anyways.

Anly other thing to do would be to move to an AMD SB850/950 based system with 6 sata3 ports... or upgrade that board to another high-end P67 board with the Marvell 9182 controller which is only marginally slower than the Intel/AMD 6G chip with its extra PCI-E lane versus the Marvell 9128's 1 lane implementation.

Hi GR - Speaking of AMD boards - do you know how I would enable read ahead and write back on an AMD board?
I have seen these enabled in AMD's RAIDXpert on a Gigabyte 990FX board, - no luck on my ASUS. Would Praz over at the OCZ forums possibly be a source for this info? I seem to remember he was using an AMD setup at one time.

The only thing more mysterious to me is the existence of Bigfoot. I have asked this question everywhere I can think of without getting an answer.

mine did. lots of bsod and hard freezes. doesn't do it anymore since the last FW though.

Ouch, your V3 was a dud and you got crapped on by AMD's customer support over your bulldozer? bad luck comes in three's, what was your third?

I was under the impression since USB 3.0 is 1gb/s under sata 3 it would be a much better option than sata 2 which is rated for 3gb/s so the sata 3 ssd would not be as bottlenecked. My motherboard is P8z68 V LX, I am switching from a P8P67 regular that had the marvels. I probably should of went for a better z68 board, but I dont think there will be any turning back now.

theoretical speed.. yes. Actual speed after overhead and extra latency that comes with USB is not anywhere close to sata3 and barely above sata2. Some newer USB 3.0 boards have sort of Turbo mode to utlize more bandwidth through extra PCI-E lane allowance.. I think.

Something like that anyways and too lazy to reread it again. lol

Talk to Praz as he beta-tests for ASUS(and owns many) and can usually answer most questions.
