I have an old computer that I have turned into a NAS box using Naslite+. Naslite+ is a great program btw

Computer Specs:

  • Pentium III 750MHz
  • ATI Radeon VE 7000 32MB (Dual monitor)
  • 288 MB SDRam
  • WD 500 GB HDs x 2
  • WD 300 GB HD
  • CDROM

I have had some issues and lost a drive in Naslite's admin screen as not being mounted from a power failure. This is no problem, as I have found out that a simple solution is to use a Linux LiveCD to transfer the files to one of the other drives in the box. This is easier said than done with my issues

I am trying to use a Linux LiveCD (tried knoppix, and Xubuntu) and have had issues at the last moment before they fully load into memory. The monitor goes black and it seems to have powered off or be in a power save mode (screen is black and there is a blinking power led).

I have tested both LiveCDs on another system, and there is no issue with the CDs.

I notice that while the LiveCDs are loading on the problem computer, the screen has vertical bars all throughout. The video card is in good working order, and I am currently running MemTest86 to check all the ram and the only thing I can think of is a bad PSU.

I have had issues with PSUs crapping out in the past with similar mentioned issues. I was wondering if there is anything else I may have overlooked?

Thank you for any and all help with this matter

thanks for the reply

I did some searches and see that someone else reported issues with their system that was similar... appears to be a weird bug with ATI vid cards... but xubuntu 6.06 (Dapper Drake) seems to work fine... downloading as I type

Will report back either way

Found the solution, it was the blasted Radeon VE 7000 (dual monitor) video card. I guess Linux does not like dual monitor video cards

Dual monitors have been hit or miss with linux in my experience, some people have 0 issues while some strive for days before getting anything working
