I bought GA-990FXA-UD3 rev 3.0. It was on sale so I thought I got a good deal. I installed it with FX-8350 and the board would throttle CPU voltage even on stock frequency and voltage. I disabled all the power saving features and enabled HPC mode. Nothing helps. The CPU voltage will drop to 0.95V. I have good cooling to keep the temp under 60 and was expecting to do some OC. Now the board wont even run stock let alone OC.

Appearently this is a common issue with this board.

I had a Gigabyte Z68X-UD3H-B3 motherboard that came in a bundle with my i5 2500k. Not sure if it was because it didn't like my power supply (an OEM HP one with no on/off switch), but it wouldn't shut down the computer (fans would stil be running after shutdown, either at 100% or 0%), and it boot looped a lot.

Switched to a Biostar TZ77XE3 for a cheaper price, and more features. Haven't regretted it since.

Added to the fact that apparently Gigabyte video cards are all voltage locked; I think it's fair to say that I won't buy from Gigabyte again either.

I have a gigabyte motherboard, it is good, but I can see your point, they have been locking voltage on GPU' too, always pays to look at reviews and stats first. Do your research...

Gigabyte changed the UEFI on the Rev 3 version of this board. The previous two revisions had appropriate power management options in the UEFI. There is a Rev 4 version of the board available now according to Gigabyte; maybe they got smart and put the power management options back.

I had the very same board with the same issues and dumped it for a Sabertooth 990fx R2. I should have gone that route right from the start. i did come across a workaround though involving AMD OverDrive and disabling the turbo core from within that program. That will stop the throttling. Some have reported that enabling HPC in the UEFI will stop the throttling as well but I can't verify that first hand.

The VRM on that board get scorching hot when running. Some have had success in aiming a fan directly at the VRM to keep them cool. I think 90C on the VRM is the point they throttle the CPU back, but I could be mistaken. I don't recall where that number came from so verifying the legitimacy is impossible.

Good Luck!

How does a fan run at 0%?

I returned the board to the ship where I bought it and bought a ASUS M5A99FX.
The ASUS board is of a much better quality. Finer voltage increment, better heatsink, more options in BIOS, and more connectors.

SABERTOOTH is a bit too expensive imo. I am happy with my replacement.

Try running IBT see if the voltage changes, I'm not sure I get your point? As everything is working, but you think the CPUv should be higher What am I missing?
