1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.
Strictly NAS, 7TB+ usable (5x2TB in Raid 5). Headless, probably running FreeNAS or something else simple. This is a backup NAS. I will just run software raid, and if it breaks, I'll rebuild from the original data source. I care deeply about this data, which is why I am building a second NAS to backup my robust file server. I'd just like this NAS to have >0 disk redundancy and a continuous volume. Noise, heat, and size are also a concern because his thing will be dumped in a closet somewhere.

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread
As cheap as possible. I'd like to get the everything but the storage drives (mobo, cpu, ram, case, boot drive or possibly boot flash (FreeNAS)) for under $350. I'm thinking either Atom or cheapo clarkdale.

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.
US (newegg probably)

4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc.
Intel for interoperability with other parts/systems. (I know an AMD system would world splendidly with my existing Intel systems, but I like to scavenge or cobble things together in a pinch, so I try to keep everything Intel.)

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.
None. I might have an i7-920, but I doubt that would be very useful to me for this build.

6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.
I've read some threads which were helpful, but most people are looking to put together more robust systems. This NAS is just a backup of a robust system.

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.
Shouldn't need to overclock, but I'm not against it. Heat and noise are concerns, so overclocking probably won't be on the table.

8. What resolution YOU plan on gaming with.
No gaming. Headless, in fact. Integrated GPU please.

9. WHEN do you plan to build it?
Now?

Thanks!

The problem with Atom is finding one with enough SATA ports. You should really reconsider AMD, Intel has nothing that can touch them on the low-end.

Sargas 145 + GA-MA785GM-US2H $92
Crucial DDR2 800 $36
430CX $30 AR
Antec Three Hundred $45 AR
Total: $203 w/o HDD

For the HDD's, I would suggest the new Samsung F4 2TB drives. They're a steal at $95 each until tomorrow.

When you set up FreeNAS, I would suggest that you install to a USB flash drive instead of having the OS on one of the data drives. That makes the whole array portable to another FreeBSD system should the need arise.

Thanks for the help guys. This is what I ended up with:

OCZ ModXStream Pro OCZ600MXSP 600W ATX12V V2.2 / EPS12V SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Modular Active PFC ...

AMD Sempron 145 Sargas 2.8GHz Socket AM3 45W Single-Core Desktop Processor SDX145HBGMBOX

FIVE (5) SAMSUNG Spinpoint F4 HD204UI 2TB 5400 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

Kingston ValueRAM 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model KVR1333D3N9K2/2G

BIOSTAR TA785G3HD AM3 AMD 785G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

Antec Three Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

$715.90 total ($240.95 without drives), plus an extra $30 off from MIR, so overall, not a bad deal for 8TB Raid 5 NAS. After rebate, thats $85 per TB for RAID NAS.

It should meet all of my reqs just fine. It'll run cool and dead quiet. Those Samsung drives were just rated by silentpcreview as the quietest and coolest 2TB drive on the market. The PS has a thermally activated 120mm fan.

I went in that direction because newegg had good combo deals with those parts. I think for a simple NAS stuck in a closet, it will be fine.
