Fingolfin, if you want to keep your regular router, yes, you would just get the access point. I got the access point because I would never give up my linux firewall/router. Everything is working fine. I love my access point. to configure the access point, you need to temporarily plug it in your computer to configure it (or change your tcp/ip settings to match the acess points internal one, to activiate the SNMP screen). And yes, this access point does bridging if you configure it which is what access points do.

is $25 really the cheapest USB 802.11b adapter out there? cause i just want to have one lying around incase someone brings over a laptop, or for a lan game or 2 i dont really NEED one. but id like one

I think so, otherwise we woulda seen it on this forum, i don't think we ever need anything in life, except for food, air and water, and gasoline (speaking of which, has scarily creeping upward). Having one or two lying a round is not a bad idea.

You can find wired USB Ethernet adapters for cheaper (I got one for $7.00). These will of course work fine with a laptop.

right, but id like an extra wireless lying around, i have a usb ethernet adapter that i bought years ago lying around in case we need to get someone on a network fast, but this is for someone to get on in an unwired room. i dunno AR i can get a D-Link usb adapter at BB for cheaper (with that 15% off coupon i got from the book in the mail) but i hear bad things bout dlink but hell if i cared about brand would i be considering this, grrrrr maybe if i just wait around, they will continue to drop in price,

Promptly received both USB and PCMCIA adapters.
Using with Toshiba 750CDT, dual boot Win98se/WinXP.
Testing each device separately, and USB installed problem free both O.S.

PCMCIA works fine with 98se, but no go with XP.
Tried everything with XP. Card led doesn't light up.
Insert card, led blinks once then off, and XP doesn't see it or do a thing.
Fresh install of Windows XP w/SP1, different drivers (CD, downloaded, XP,2k, etc).
Still nothing in XP.

To confirm it's not the laptop, borrowed a friends Netgear 401A, and it instantly was seen by XP, and works well.

So there are some compatability issues with these PCMCIA adaptors in some systems.

That is exactly what I am shopping for, bargain deals on 802.11a and 802.11b access points, routers, and cpe's that have external antenna connectors. Anyone know where I can dig up some of this stuff with 100mw or 200mw power for cheap?

Got my stuff the other day.
Wireless broadband router and the wireless usb.

After installing the new drivers and having to reinstall Windows on my second computer
(the wife has a bad habit of just turning the damn thing off without shutting it down and has hosed it
a few times) everything is up and running smooth.

Great deal for $57 and change shipped and no rebate waits or hassles.
Plus now that I can share the broadband the wife is banned from MY computer.

I downloaded the driver examined the INF file, and this PCMCIA wirelss card uses an Atmel chipset. Try using drivers from another brand who uses the same chipset, such as Belkin or Gigafast. If they have more than one wireless card download available, look at the .inf file and find the one that lists:
PCMCIA\ATMEL-AT76C502AR-F19C
PCMCIA\ATMEL-AT76C502AR-59BD

For the Belkin, I believe it's F5D6020 Version 2.

I've done this sort of driver mix-and-matching with D-Link, Linksys, Netgear, and USR cards before. They're all based on the same reference drivers from the chipset manufacturer. But one brand may have a newer driver package with newer reference driver than the other brands.
