Very confusing I/O device error

I have a very confusing problem, perhaps anyone here can help shed some light on it?

When copying any type of file or folder from one drive to another sometimes I get "Target: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error." This happens using regular Windows copy (Windows 7 64-bit) or TeraCopy (version 2.12). Some folders on the drive just won't accept copies, while others do. And I always get the same result. I've also tried copying from another computer (Windows XP).

What I found is I can copy files into a folder one down from where I want them, then once they're there, move them to the right folder.

The problem isn't related to anything video wise (it applies to any file type, .txt, .exe, .jpg etc), but just for example I can't copy anything from another drive straight to here:

Y: \FamilyVideos\TV\The Sopranos\The Sopranos - Season 1\ (I put a space at the start there just for this post, otherwise the address's have :\ smilies in them)

But I can to here:

Y: \FamilyVideos\TV\The Sopranos\

Yet some folders like this, I can copy anything I want into them and it always works:

Y: \FamilyVideos\TV\Arrested Development\Arrested Development - Season 1\

Using The Sopranos folder for an example again, even if I create a sub-folder in there simply called "a", I get the same I/O error.

No matter what I can't seem to find why some folders work but others don't. I even tried making some crazy long folders within folders within folders and so on... and they can work perfectly.

Looking around with Google I couldn't seem to find a case as strange as this. But hopefully it's more common than I think. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks very much for your time!

Thanks for your reply They are .mkv files. Now that you mention file types though, I just gave it a go with some other files like .txt and sadly they come up with the same error.

To open .mkv file in xp or vista follow the steps below:-

  • Go to CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack) Project page and download their CCCP Pack
  • Once downloaded, install to your computer, and restart your PC (i encounter some problem open .mkv file without restart the PC, so better restart)
  • Once restarted, you can open .mkv file by double clicking on it. (if it doesnt run, just drag the file to Window Media Player and it will play.) ( Just Google it.

Sorry, I can play them no problem. The MKV files were just what I happened to be copying when I first found the problem. But I have the same i/o device error copying any file, for example .txt to certain folders from a different drive.

Sorry please ignore the mkv / video side of this problem. The folders like The Sopranos were just an example, but the copying error is the same with a photo (.jpg) or text (.txt) or program (.exe). It doesn't matter what type of file, it's the problem of copying one type of file or folder to certain locations on a different drive.

Instead I have to copy them to a lower folder (for example c: \ rather than c: \folder\folder\ ), and then once they are in there, I can move them to where I wanted them to begin with (to c: \folder\folder for example).

Things have been a bit crazy here but I finally get to check this thread again. Good thing I haven't used the drive since then either if it's failing. Thank you! I'll run a full scan on it.
