is it possible for a company to advertise on their web site a price of a product after a rebate; then proceded to make a statement like

Receive an EXCLUSIVE $40 Mail-in-Rebate from Buy.com!
Purchase the Western Digital Raptor 74GB Hard Drive and receive an EXCLUSIVE $40 Mail-in-Rebate from Buy.com! Offer valid from 3/1/2004 to 3/7/2004
Rebate forms not shipped with product. Click here to display rebate form.

and then not give you the proper items to recieve this rebate?
it's seems like we are looking way too much into this...

just my 2 cents

SKU (stockkeeping unit, sometimes spelled "Sku") is an identification, usually alphanumeric, of a particular product that allows it to be tracked for inventory purposes. Typically, an SKU (pronounced with the individual letters or as SKYEW) is associated with any purchasable item in a store or catalog. For example, a woman's blouse of a particular style and size might have an SKU of "3726-8," meaning "Style 3726, size 8." The SKU identification for a product may or may not be made visible to a customer. SKU numbers can sometimes be seen in online e-commerce sites.
An SKU is not the same as a product model number from a manufacturer, although the model number could form all or part of the SKU. The SKU is established by the merchant.

OK? are we done being stupid now? We'll all be here 10 weeks from now. Post your checkstub.
Hey, let's not fight over this be Buy.com rebate. It explicitly says "Purchase a Western Digital® Raptor 74GB Hard Drive (Item #CKU9V5) and receive an EXCLUSIVE $40 rebate by mail from Buy.com!". So unless your SKU label says something other than "CKU9V5" you should be OK.

C'mon, if Buy.com rejects the rebate for the "CKU9V5"--they are in a big trouble. If they ship you HD with the different SKU--use the "chargeback" feature of your credit card (wrong product shipped).

[off-topic] I am guilty of quick-posting as well... just look at the other forum... [/off topic]

I just received my hd and the SKU# on the side of the box does not match the rebate form.

Mine is C72171, anyone else?

Your order confirmation does show correct sku code, right? Call them 949-389-2000 or 877-780-2464 (7am-7pm M-F and 8-12 Sat, MST) and start bitching about getting wrong item.

OK, to put an end to all of this:

The rebate form states the rebate is good on item #CKU9V5. When you look at the Buy.com web site, the item number is plainly marked under the picture of the hard drive. When you receive the hard drive, cut out the UPC on the side of the box (see Kung Lau's post above), make a copy of the receipt, and send it to the rebate house listed on the rebate form. This is NOT a Western Digital rebate as their rebates normally go to Minnesota or Connecticut. This is going to Arizona. If you do not receive your rebate within the time mentioned on the form, THEN start complaining.

If you are too squeamish to worry about this, DON'T BUY IT.

Otherwise, this is a pretty hot deal!

That doesn't even make any sense. I don't need to ask because I'm the one telling you the SKU is the UPC they refer to. But, for the record, I did ask a co-worker of mine who used to work retail and he confirmed what I've already been telling all of you. Geezus, buy.com is not trying to play an April Fool's joke.

Then why bother telling us? That doesn't really help anyone.

is it possible that you could remember where? i really don't browse forums too much or know which ones are the most popular for the best deals. i plan on getting two of these for myself so any added savings would be greatly appreciated.

thx in advance,

LOL, you guys are funny.

First, this is a repost of this.

Second, on the argument of SKU=UPC. Any company can make up their own SKU system. A SKU is a just a bunch of numbers and/or letters that a company (normally a retailer) uses to keep up with the items that they sell. A retailer CAN use the UPC as their SKU, the manufacturers model number as a SKU or anything they want. Most companies DO NOT use the UPC as their SKU. Everybody around here should know that.

The problem that MorganNY points out in the original thread is that when he received this drive from buy.com it did not have a UPC bar code on the box. It came in an OEM box. The rebate specifically states (as most all rebate forms do) that the original UPC code is required. In the case the SKU != UPC. buy.com obviously screwed up this rebate deal. buy.com USED TO BE a great palce to order from but now a days the few deals that they have they usually screw up like this and you have a hard time resolving it through their wonderful email system.

What I am saying is that Kung Lau received his and it DID have a UPC on the box. MorganNY is the one that needs to be complaining to either Buy.com or his credit card company.

Kung Lau said his SKU/buy.com item# did not match. He didn't say anything about having a UPC on it or not unless I missed something.
