At CompUSA (Circuit City for new people), you can BUY a Toshiba cable modem for $199, return your old one to AT&T and the monthly fee is now just $29.95!!!

But...you ask, where is the HOT Deal..(mods are ready to lock already)

Today and Saturday, there is a $100 rebate on the modem and if you get the Internet Starter Kit for $29.95 there is a further $75 rebate!!

So pay $229 and get a $175 rebate and $10 off the cable bill EVERY month!!

does the kit itself have the $75 rebate or after you buy the kit, you get the $75 as additional rebate for the cable modem?

i'm not very familiar w/ toshiba cable modem.
is it a decent one and is it compatible w/ att service?

you should state the fact that the cable modem only cost about $55 after all the rebates.
it's better than saying "very hot".

Hmmmm, my TW/Roadrunner cable modem is also a Toshiba ...

Does anyone know if TW/Roadrunner has a similar dollars off program if you buy the cable modem.

Does it matter exactly what model number we are talking, or do they all work pretty much the same, with compatibily down pat, as V90 dialup modems mostly do these days?

Anyone have any clue if it'll work for TimeWarner in San Diego? I'm on the Road Runner service, and so far, I've used two cable modems from them. Both Motorola boxes. Wonder if this Toshiba box will work for it?

Do you mean that Circuit City and CompUSA are the same? I hope not, or I missed the wagon by ordering my Iomega 12/10/32 online!! CompUSA does not list any store locations here, though there is a Circuit City in my town.

I'm debating between cable and DSL. Have people with DSL been getting DSL modems as part of a monthly subscription package, or have you been buying them yourselves? Thanks,

This is a great deal. My parents bought my relatives (who live in Oregon) this Toshiba cable modem for Christmas (not sure where) and it ended up costing ~$50 after all the rebates. Why they didn't buy the same cable modem for ourselves... well why didn't they, darnit?!

Last week in Sarasota,Fl Circuit City Had the Toshiba pcx1100 Cable modem for $199.00 and a @Home Quick start kit for 29.99
with $230.00 Back in Rebates a $100.00 form CC and a $100 From @Home and $30.00 from CC on the starter kit (one Hell of a hot deal) Turned my RCA back in to @home now saving $7.00 Mth. rental fee on modem.

I would like to get some more info on that "Starter Kit". I called CompUSA, but the rep had no idea what I was talking about. So much for staff trainig, huh? Anyway, I also have @Home and would like to spend less and get my own equipment, so help me out someone.

The Cable/DSL question really depends upon how each are actually implemented in your home burg.

Cable is more variable, but potentially a lot faster. DSL tends to have the same speed all the time, and not depend upon how many of your neigbor get wired up and are online at the same time the way cable does. But DSL comes in various flavors (speeds). And your actual speed may be worse because of noisy phone lines to your house/condo, or you are far from the last switch. Once established though, yor DSL speed will remain the same at all times.

Cable speeds can be several times faster than DSL, and are nearly always the same or cheaper.

My recommendation is to get cable, and try it (unless you hear from next door neighbors that it Sux -- (and you believe them - they may have a motive, see above). Because cable is potentially much faster. And tends to not have large or sometimes any installation costs. If it actually sux, then try DSL.

I've got Roadrunner cable in NYC myself for about six months now, and its DA Bomb.

Has anyone done this yet? While I was getting a cable modem installed [@home RCA Cable modem DCM215], he said if I bought my own modem, I would have to make sure it's compatible with their cable modem and coordinate with the main office to have the IP addies setup. If this isn't a plug-n-play solution, it may be more trouble than it's worth. There are different types of cable modems, so you have to be sure it's compatible.

BTW - the starter kit is basically the same thing as visiting AT&T's @home website and signing up.

Thanks dougjnn. I've had a cable modem in the past (different part of town), and I liked it, though you could see a noticeable decline in speed in the evening. My main concern, outside of using a cable modem in a different location, is the cost associated with initially setting up DSL. ATT supplied the modem before (or possibly better with this deal), but I've not talked with anyone who used DSL. Do they supply all the equipment, or do you have to buy a special DSL modem? Thanks,

dchilder: If you shop around, you can almost always get completely free DSL installation.

Earthlink/Mindspring gives you the modem, a network card, and installation all free. (Plus, it's all yours to keep even after you cancel.)

Just called around here in Phoenix and CompUSA doesn't have it. Circuit City however does.
The offer here is $199 for the Toshiba modem with COX offering free ($150) installation. That means the deal here isn't quite as sweet. The Internet Starter Kit is $29.99 with a free month internet service (29.99) savings.

okay I have Comcast@home in Orange county and they told me when I moved here about 3months ago that I couldn't use the Toshiba
Modem that I have and I can only use the Motorola one they gave me. Do anybody know if Comcast @home in Orange County (fullerton Buena park area) can use a Toshiba Modem?

Dougjnn to answer your question: no time warner does not offer a discount for using your own modem. I just called and the csr acted very proud that they dont charge for the use of the modem. When i told him about the $29.99 deal he ended the conversation very quickly.

I was told that CompUSA rebates was for new or existing Cable modem subscribers. I was told that CC was for new subscribers only. I, of course, did not mean they were the same store.

NOTE: This is a Toshiba PCX1100...the LATEST!

Also, you return your EXISTING cable modem to AT&T...in my case they had given me a Com21...I thought for free!! NEVER did they say the added $10 to your monthly bill!

Are you in the Bay Area? AT&T@Home is charging me $49.99 a month and $10 is for the modem. So unless you're subscribing for at least 10 months, a $100 modem (after rebate) is not worth it.

By the way, you mentioned the rebate is for new subscribers only. Do you mean the Starter Kit rebate? Or the actual modem rebate?
