For those who asked about cable modem compatibiltiy here's the little I know:

Most cable suppliers require a DOCSIS compliant modem which seems to be what most of them are (including the Toshiba)

Also most cable companies want you to use a specific brand modem to make it easier on their tech support staff. Here in Atlanta (AT&T/ Roadrunner)they said I could use another DOCSIS modem if I wanted but they wouldn't support it if I called in with a problem.

I wonder if this applies to the San Diego area where I have Cox Cable modem (Cox@khome).

I am stopping by CompUSA on my way home and also Circuit City to see if this offer is available in the San Diego area.

FYI Cox cable uses both the Toshiba and the Motorola modems.

Well if you live in Long Island, NY cable modems are sold by The Wiz.
Currently, you can get a modem for free if you spend $100 there. Of course you have to sign up for the service from Cablevision but still a good deal. I believe the service is $30/month.

I am using AT&T @home for $39 a month. I was told there was no discount for using my own modem the last time I called. Has anyone worked out the actual procedure how to ge this discount?

I have ATT@home service, recently subscribed for 39.95+tax total to $42.00/mo. in the Bay Area. This deal is awesome because I get 2 months free before actual fees are charged. The CSR also indicated that they will remove the $10.00 lease for the modem if you have your own modem. I haven't been to Circuit City or CompUSA but I'm wondering if that discount is for existing customers or new customers. As I said earlier, I just barely got this service started this month.
Thanks,

<< ATT is the cable company that is providing his cable service......My cable company is Charter cable....I am leaving work to get the modem now at CC and will be returning mine to Charter....get it? >>

Do you have an email address I can contact charter to see if this deal is correct? I have Charter also.

Never mind, I just read the faq on the Charter@home web page, and it does say its $29 with your own modem.

How much will the Charter@Home service cost?
In most areas, Charter@Home will cost $29.95 per month with the Expanded Basic plan. Prices may vary by area.

You will also have to either purchase or rent a cable modem. You may rent a cable modem from Charter for $15 a month. If you do not wish to rent a cable modem, you may purchase one from Charter for $299.

I am in Portland, Oregon. I was shocked to see the Modem is a pcx1100...the LATEST DOCSIS ver 1.1!!!

The rebate coupon (MUST ask at customer service desk) is multi color and has Toshiba/CompUSA and ATT@Home logo's on it!

Glcao...CC is for new only. IF you go to CompUSA (El Camino?
they (AT&T) do not care if you have had the service before...in fact the fine print on CompUSA form says it is for NEW OR existing customers.

Here it is $39.95-10 =$29.95!

I knew it was expensive there when we lived in Saratoga!!

I called COMPUSA national sales line and they said it's a Toshiba rebate but were sold out. Called the local store and they had never heard of it. I called Circuit City and they said it was only a rumor. Which is it? BTW: I'm in OK City using Road Runner (same as COX@home) in OKC. Is this only a local deal?

OK, now I'm pissed. Gearing up to go on the war path.

I called TW/Roadrunner in NYC and was told that they do offer a discount if one supplies one's own compatible cable modem.

Trouble is, their discount is only $5/month!!!

Now, what really is puuuky abou that is the following. Guess what price they charge you a month for an equipment charge if you suspend your cable service because you are vactioning, or on extended assignement, or whatever? $9.95/mo

TW cable charges the same price for equipment rental during suspend periods as it charges for that rental on a regular monthly basis - e.g. for cable boxes and remotes. So its pretty clear that their real rental price is 9.95/mo of the cable modem, while they only discount $5 for supplying your own.

I started talking about writing letters to the FCC while their AOL acquisition is still not final, in light of the clearly monopolistic price gouging which their skimpy $5/mo discount for supplying one's own modem represents. Especially in light of competitor's such as @home offering %10.

(For those that dont' know, getting regulatory approval for mergers is a time of high leverage by regulators on industries. They its the best time to get concessions out of them.)

The CSR got rather nervous. Kicked me upstairs, to the marketing department. Too late on a Friday to make any progress, however.

What do you all think???

The idiots at my local (CulverCity, CA) compusa didn't know anything as usual.
And once the deal comes in, they buy it themselves and sell it on egay.
Like the harddrives and IOmega zip and now this.

Ok...here is the deal in DFW, Texas area......I stopped at the CC in Irving.....ATT is the cable company locally in Irvng....they had the modem for 199.00...Toshiba....BUT....the manager said the rebate forms that prints automatically with the reciept was not printing, this he said led him to believe that the Toshiba modem was NOT the modem with the rebate...I told him that is the ONLY cable modem you carry though, it must be it.....he was waiting for the Head Office to call him back. I looked at the ad...no specific modem is mentioned...just "digital cable modem". He said the 199.00 price was everyday, I got a credit for the modem until he found out....ALSO....the software (starter kit) in that store was specifically noted 75.00 rebate for ATT@home customers. I am an Charter@home customer...no good for me......anyway....I stopped at another store closer to home...N Richland Hills...they didn't even carry any cable modems...I asked...they said because ATT@home is not in the area....Charter@home...duh.....office said they can't sell cable modems at all...funny...Charter's web page says you can buy your own at a retail store as long as it is DOCSIS....I will go back to the other store and buy IF the rebate is good...it is a CC rebate.......99.00 is still a good deal....came with a nice bundle of software itself....email me if you have any questions about my gibberish.

Just called around... it looks like I can't order @home now. It is available, but evidently because of a "shortage" of some cable necessary for "upgrades", they are not taking new installation orders right now. They said they've been waiting for the stuff since October, but only stopped taking orders here two weeks ago. I hope there is not a long backlog of installation orders... Anyone else had any problems getting it installed?

I am currently subscribed to at&t@home for $40/month. But there is no COMPUSA in my town. :-( I wish I could get in on this deal to save me $10 a month. Is it possible for me to ask my bro at LA to buy the modem and still get the rebate without using it at LA?

I ordered mine on Jan 2nd and had it installed on 4th !!! Before that, I tried ordering online couple times, but was informed that they were unable to schedule the installation at that time and that I should try in 48 hours...
BTW, so far it rocks At night getting ~1 Mpbs (using 2wire's bandwith meter) and in the morning ~3.5 Mbps...

To clarify will this deal work for any @home subscriber? In example, I have cox@home (not Att@home or other). Does the rebate necessitate being an ATT customer? Anyone know if this is a nationwide deal or not? Any information available on the rebate form itself?
Thanks!

Just got off the phone withn the manager of the Irving Circuit City...he said "the cash register prints 2 - $50 CC rebate forms...BUT you MUST buy both the Toshiba modem and the Starter kit...for the rebates to print. I don't know if I can use the $75 rebate form that comes with the starter kit....it says "ATT@home customer", I think (fingers crossed here) that I should be able to....being that I am an @home customer...just not ATT. But I could use the other $30 rebate for the software though...still getting the modem for $99......good deal if you ask me....I am paying $15 bucks extra to "rent" the modem......buying would be well worth $99......FYI....look for more deals on cable modems.....Motorola (General Instruments) is coming out with new modems later this year....including a wireless cable modem.

ok,
I just went to local CC and found that there is $100($50 for modem and $50 for starter kit) rebate from Comcast for puchase of toshiba modem and starter kit. Where is the other $75 rebate?
I'm in Nothern CA.

and for those who care, it's only $7/month discount for using your own modem in
my area.
