Actually here's what I got from Dell:

I can advise you that industry wide there is a minimum of 7 pixels
out. Within 30 days from the invoice date, you can receive an
exchange with less than 7 pixels out at no cost to you, because
of our total satisfaction guarantee. However, outside of that
time frame, there has to be 7 pixels or more in order to receive
an exchange.

I ordered the 1901FP last night at 9:00 pm eastern and just checked, 9-12-03 9:00 am eastern, and the monitor has already shipped! It is in transit to the carrier's hub. That's fast. I'm not used to this level of customer service.

Just a quick plug for the 2000fp: Stunning picture quality, great performance in games, huge, bright, beautiful, worth every penny.

In a word.

Yeah, that's my gripe. I had to go for the 2000fp even though 19" would have been fine, but UXGA is a must. With this kind of price range you would expect this monitor to be useful for quite a while and I think that a max of 1280x1024 is not going to be large enough in a few years. (the next lower size, 1024x768 is definitely too small when you run XP!). The only 19" I could find that does UXGA is a Samsung and reviews for gaming were not so hot.

Also, my GF4-Ti4800 can't achieve good FPS at either 1280x1024 or 1600x1200, so until I get a new card (my goal is sub-$100 for a 5900 Ultra leve card) I would have to live with a black border around the screen and smaller picture when playing at a lower resolution like 1024x768. Instead, with a 1600x1200 picture I can set my in-game resolution to 800x600 and let the monitor double the picture automatically in each direction, basically one pixel in the frame buffer maps to 4 on the screen with no distorstion. The trick is, at 800x600 I can turn on full antialiasing and anysotropic filtering in the card with no worry about impacting the framerate, so even through the resolution is 4 times worse, the picture on the screen still looks great!

Another tip: this 2000fp has S-video input, so when it's time to upgrade to your next monitor, you can hang this panel on the wall and use it as a flat TV hooked up to a VCR or DVD player.

Is it worth it (despite the size and power issues) to get a 20" flat panel? I'm going from a 22" CRT (20" viewable) and have no intentions of ever viewing less than this (except on laptops and work machines).<a href="http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=40&threadid=1137486">

1.) What is Dell's return policy for DEAD pixels (say 1 dead picxel)?

2.) Are the 19" or 20" monitors good for FPS gaming and such?

space saving on your desk. That's a big one for me, I don't have room for larger than 17"
lower power.
DVI interface is very crisp.
Distortion free image.

On the other hand if you have a good quality 22" CRT and don't mind the space it takes, stick with it, especially if it is a flat screen CRT. Color fidelity, contrast ratio and pixel responses are much better on a CRT than LCD.

Of course there is always the cool factor...

See my post from yesterday quoting Dell. Note that what they really say is that they will exchange a display if you're not happy with it but they don;t guarantee that the replacement will not have DEll pixel either.

I know several people that own those and they have no dead pixels, but I don't know what that really means.

As far as gaming, everyone seems to think that the 2000fp is great for gaming even though it is rated at 25ms. I ordered one and I'm a gamer so I hope these reviews are right. On the other hand most magazines and sites that cater to gamers say that high quality CRTs are still superior to LCDs for a fraction of the cost. (see my post above too). Unfortunately all the people I know that have that LCD have it at work, so I have not epxerienced gaming on one of those first hand.

Ditto... except I got the 1800fp. Hopefully I'll get it sometime next week! Thanks for the post, I almost missed this deal. With all that I'm read on this forum, I'm sure I'll love it. I ended up ordering mine from Home/Home Office cuz of the no tax it came out cheaper...same as $400 + tax for me in CA, which was what I was looking for...

Dell Small Business charges tax in all states where state sales tax is charged unless you have a tax exempt number on file with them. Dell Home only charges sales tax on those states where they have a physical presence (FL, KY, NC, NV, OH, PA, TN, AND TX).

Some things to consider:
  • 1800FP - .285 mm Pixel Pitch / 1280 x 1024 / 18.1 viewable - widely quoted as best FP for gaming
    1901FP - .294 mm Pixel Pitch / 1280 x 1024 / 19.0 viewable - protrait mode for image and text editing
    2000FP - .255 mm Pixel Pitch / 1600 x 1200 / 20.1 viewable - best overall image based on dot-pitch and resolution

how hot do these get compared to CRT monitors? I have two huge 21" monsters that I'm using now... they get pretty hot. Are these a lot cooler?

Dell just sent out a 10% coupon which can be combined with the 20% off flat panels.

1800FP $381 (+tax)
1901FP $468

I subscribed to the Dell mailing list using two different email addresses. My yahoo account never seems to get the coupons; however, my school account does.
