Very low F.E.A.R fps on Intel E6400+ Nvidia 7900GT?!?!

Hello from Australia! I would very much appreciate if someone could let me know what I am doing wrong here - I am getting very low fps in F.E.A.R ver 1.00 retail. the min fps is 30, average fps is 47 and max fps is 75 @ 1024x768, other people are getting MUCH higher scores than that with lower setups.

My system consists of Intel E6400 running on Asus P5W DH Deluxe with Gigabyte 7900GT, installed software are WinXP SP2 and Nvidia Forceware 91.47. I then overclocked the CPU from 2.13ghz to 3.2ghz, the fps in F.E.A.R did not improve by one bit!!!

There must be something seriously wrong with my setup, what is it? anyone have any idea?

Do you have your graphics settings maxed out in FEAR? If so, you will be mostly limited by your video card, and no amount of cpu overclocking will get you noticeable gains.

1)Are you using soft shadows?

2)Are you using 4x AA with 16x AF?

3)Is your system brand new and working fine with other games?

4)Update FEAR and nvidia drivers.

with my rig, on max settings (AA all the way and AF all the way with all the shadows etc..maxed) at 1280x1024 i'd pull an average of 40-60 fps and would max over 100 sometimes. however, i played their new FEAR extraction demo and those numbers held true until one part in the game the FPS dropped to 10. i don't know if its because its a demo but you should be getting better results.

rofl, its probly ur ram

u have to have 1GB of one stick or MATCHING ram to get high fps (2GB would be MUCH better)

That is a very low fps for that system... especially at 1024x768. If you were running at 1280x1024, then thos numbers would sound more reasonable.

Update FEAR. Try overclocking the video card some.

Also what RAM do u have.

He probably has Soft Shadoes enabled. That halves your framerate.

Oh, and if you're not using Triple Buffering with DXTweaker, then be sure to DISABLE your VSYNC, as that has a major performance impact as well without Triple Buffering.

You need to patch FEAR as the first patch improved perf on nvidia cards.

Also, you cannot run Soft Shadows and AA at the same time as the game does not render correctly when both are on.

Also make sure you have the latest chipset drivers installed for your system.

lmfao it cuz he need 1337 brand ram 4 hie FPS j00 noob!

Seriously though, patch fear and play with the settings and see what happens. I wasent too impressed with my X1900XT's performance with it, but i havent patched it yet as i downloaded the wrong patch, after a quarter of a gig download and THEN you find out its the wrong version... it puts ya off Its supposed to improve performance though.

It certainly does. I noticed that I gained roughly 8 frames or so from just the newest patch in the in-game benchmark. The gameplay was all-around smoother as well.

I find I get mad stuttering with textures set to Maximum. I have 1GB of RAM, and 256MB of VRAM. Anyone else experience this as well?

That's why. Textures can take up a good amount of system memory and virtual memory. My brother uses "Medium" texture settings in BF2 because he's only got 1 GB of system memory.

Yeah, I use Medium textures on FEAR too; no suttetering there. I just didn't realize the "Maximum" textures setting on F.E.A.R. required more than 1GB of system RAM.

He gets mad stuttering with textures at medium, this can't be normal. 1GB should be more than enough to play at medium settings.

I think I have a problematic F.E.A.R here... (1) i turned off soft shadow, AA and AF, the benchmark score stayed the same!! (2) the game does not have 1280x1024, only 1280x960?! (3) I downloaded a 500mb+ upgrade file only to find out it was not compatible with my version ...

askhayt, 90% of new high end games, like fear, bf2, oblivion, run best with up and over 2gb of ram. i cant even run bf2 on high everything because of only one gb of ram. im waiting till i can afford 2-4gb of ddr800 or 1000 with my p5b dh deluxe or the p5b deluxe.(crossfire).

@truefan

No game needs over 1GB for running at med settings.

Few games need 2GB, or >1GB RAM for high/max settings, that is what I said.

At the moment all/almost all games should run fine with 2GB

FEAR really needs 2gigs of RAM, dual channel. I can see the RAM load and FEAR loads over 70% of my memory. So 1gig is not enough if you want to run with eye candy enabled.
I play it at max details, 4xAA 16xAF at 1680x1050 with a custom config file. Don't know my results for sure and am to lazy to test it now, but my average FPS was 104 last time I checked.
FEAR has a stupid engine behind it. 2 upgrades before, when I had X2 4800+ and a single 7900GTX, my average was 62. And that's with just 2xAA, 8xAF

im running fear w/ med settings, with 1gb of ram, and i get minor sutttering. windows is a ram hog, flat out, it leaves almsot nothing for games if you even have a few programs running. just typing this, after i exited bf2, im using up almost half my ram as it is, askhayt, to run most games smoothly, you need to run 2gb. i hate not having 2gb as it is.

See my rig in sig.

Setting for FEAR COMBAT
1024x768
All setting maximum except soft shadows are off
4xAA 8xAF in game (not control panel)
Driver: 91.31
No overclocking on system or graphics card. 7900GT stock clocks 450/1320.

Minimum framerate: 45 Maximum framerate: 120 Average framerate: @ 75-85.

EDIT: This is for FEAR COMBAT, not the single player game. I don't know if this makes a difference.

I have a simular situation, slight hijack but somewhat on topic. I have an MSI 7900gt and the intro movie, and first interlude(?) crash my system something severe. I get Infinite Loop errors, or system reboots, or if I can leave the game, my desktop is all locked up with the FEAR exit screen and flashing like the card is trying to leave 3d mode.

This is my second card, running on a P5B, in three weeks. The wierd thing is, all my other games play perfect: Quake 4, Oblivion, Far cry... And even more confusing is if I load up FEAR multiplayer with everything on MAX, it plays fine!! I figured MP was better optimized, but its making my argument for an RMA harder to swallow.

I've tried three past generation of drivers, I've installed the MSI drivers off the CD (cleaning the system inbetween), but nothing seems to help.

Anyone else have simular problems, or more to the point a fix not involving an RMA?

Combat is a lot less stressful than the SP campaign. Runs much better for me on same settings.
