Very Quiet Harddrives?

I HATE hard drive noise. I hate the whining, and I hate the seek noise (grinding).

I have a kiosk type PC that needs to be very quite. I got a 250gb SATA Maxtor drive, because all my older Maxtors (40gb, 80gb, 120gb) have all been liquid bearing and super quite. The new one is very quite, until it seeks, then you get the loud seeking grind noise.

I have a few other older drives that make the same sound.

What is a drive brand/model that you know is very quite at seeking and just ambient noise (whine). I don't care about the size... it can be anywhere from 10gb-200gb.

Really? my 250 maxtor doesn't seem to make that much noise when it's seeking?
Well maybe because my fan is too loud for me to actually hear the harddrive.

My Seagate SATA II's are very quiet but so were the SATA and last EIDE ones I've used. Almost completly switched to Seagate now in all 4 systems.

My quietest HD ever though had to be the IBM Deskstars', especially after they failed! :| Never heard another sound out of them.:brokenheart::Q:disgust::|

The Seagate Barracuda (IVs?) are supposed to be the quietest ones. Check out www.silentpcreview.com for their impressions. Most newer 7200RPM drives with FDB are pretty dang quiet, though.

All of my Western Digital drives have been very quiet.

Really, it only seems older computers had noisy drives at work - I'm thinking of computers with CPU's slower than 500 mhz. Sometimes I've come across name brand (HP, Compaq, older Dells etc) with noisy drives. My parents 450 Mhz Dell is slow and has a noisy drive. My first homebuilt PC was based on a Pentium 3 550 mhz on a Via 133a chipset ASUS P3V4X motherboard and a Western Digital 7200 rpm drive - I was pleased how quiet it was, especially because most computers I'd used up to that point were had noisy drives.

Samsung seems to use about 40% less power too... cool = good.
