Newegg got some new external enclosures. This one is very slim and nice looking. Link.

But it's not the Oxford 911 chipset. I emailed the manufacturer, they said it's the Genesys GL711 chipset. Don't know about performance. But then again, don't know if the Oxford is God either.

Get the firewire version for $54 cause firewire is always faster than USB2 realistically.

Found this Chinese site with comparison numbers on the Oxford 911 and Genesys GL711 chipsets. But I can't read Chinese so I don't know if it's peak or average transfer rate. Anyway, the Genesys GL711 says 25MB/s and the Oxford 911 is 35MB/s. Can someone who can read Chinese please clarify what the test setup is?

How much faster is firewire than USB 2.0 ... not sure how long firewire will be around but pretty sure USB will always be here...

well considering firewire is used heavly in Digital Video already and its already making its way into hometheater for transerfering HDTV between components I tihnk its here to stay. from what I've heard USB2 and Firewire are about equal in peformace. USB still has more CPU overhead though.

Firewire has definitly been hgere a while and will be here for quite a while....

As for comparison of Firewire (400Mbps) vs. USB2 (480Mpbs) then all results(in reviews) consistently point to Firewire as being more consistent.

well.... since sony always using firewire for their high end video products. I am guessing its going to be around for a while. Besides isn't firewire 2 coming soon?

Any way, if you want a fire wire enclsoure. You should check out this one, build in LIt-Ion battery!

linky

more expensive, but great for laptop users.

YHmm, do these take in laptop drives? Or regular desktop drives?

3.5 natively, will fit a 2.5 with an IDE adapter and mounting brackets.

remember to get a firewire drive that supports larger than 137GB. I found out the hardway oxford 911 doesn't support my 200GB. Suck an egg. Oh well...new revisions supposedly do. L=http://www.wiebetech.com/ATA6firewire.htm]http://www.wiebetech.com/ATA6firewire.htm[/L]
Oh yeah stay away from Genesys...I bought one (compusa branded) and it would freeze for 2 mins then go for 10 seconds then repeat. I had to wait over an hour at compusa while the techie guy verified it to be the case.

I think Serial ATA may just take over external enclosures. I have two firewire enclosures (two 80GBs) but in the future though it may not be firewire. BTW I bought both my enclosures at compgeeks.com

I'm curious, though...this thing runs off PS/2 power...isn't PS/2 power only 5v? 3.5 drives need 5v & 12v...

Can you run files off Ipod? Never had one..... but as of size wise, ipod is bigger.

the oxford 911 doesn't support 200 GB by default, you need to have a modified version to do that. I don't know who makes it though, but I heard some ppl carries it or modify for a price.

That doesn't change the fact that it supposedly runs off ps/2 power, which implies it's 5v and that the adapter is 5v too. They make no mention of using ps/2 for laptop drives only, etc...the box even says "installed full-size3.5" hard drives"

however, for compatibility a heck of a lot more people have the UNIVERSAL serial bus than firewire. firewire is faster than usb 2.0, but if you have a usb 2.0 enclosure you can still hook it up to a regular usb 1 or 1.1 port and at least have access to your device. i'd sacrifice a little speed for a lot of compatibility, considering a main reason you would get an external enclosure would be to move around your files.

So bottom line is: buy an Oxford 911 chipset but a later revision and don't buy Genesys. Ok, how the hell are you going to find out the revision from some online store?

Also, if Oxford 911 is a must, then try this enclosure at newegg, it's the smallest one I could find that HAS Oxford 911 and it's cheap.

I was in Magnolia Hi-Fi the other day and was looking at the Panasonic 52 inch DLP. The salesman was saying that he wished that computer video cards like the radeon had gone firewire out instead of DVI out so that the DLP's would have firewire in. He seems to think that firewire was better than DVI..... apparently because it talks both ways instead of a one way stream...

It's $500 for 20GB. Isn't that a little inconvenient?

Sony backs Memory Stick, too, which looks to be heading the same way as Sony-backed Betamax...

Did you happen to notice that the USB2 version of this drive is actually $2 cheaper?

Ask youself this: How many of your friends have Firewire ports on their computers? How many have USB? How many motherboards being sold today have Firewire ports? How many have USB 2.0?

The main purpose of an external hard drive is portability, being able to take it anywhere and plug it into any computer you may need to. USB2 is much more practical in this regard, despite the fact that it may be slightly slower.

Nice enclosure, BTW. Still seems pricey to me though.
