Very slow, need help!

I have an old system that I gave to a friend. It is a dell XPS-90 pentium 90 w/32mb ram & win98se. It is running extremely slow!! According to wintune & norton si, it is running about as fast as a 486DX 33! I cannot find a turbo switch or any jumpers for turbo on the motherboard. I was at dells web site & they had a diagram for the board but had no settings for a turbo switch.

I have been told that pressing CTRL + may act as a turbo switch, but that does now work either. Any suggestions??:disgust:

the turbo switch was for 486's and earlier I believe...I don't think the pentium motherboards ever had that feature.

is the processor being recognized as a 90 at bootup? could the jumper settings have been changed to underclock it on accident?

check the dell site for the correct jumper settings for processor speed.

In the cmos & at startup it says 90mhz, but it really seems slow as a 386!

check your bios settings to make sure all the caches are turned on

is the hard drive too full? maybe needs more space for the swap file, try deleting some junk

have you ran scandisk, and ran defrag? could help a bit

maybe try a clean install of windows as a last resort...

You need to put more ram in his system. Win98SE is pretty taxing on an older machine like that. Put another 32mb in it and that should speed things up a bit. Also do a clean install. WW is probably right. there may be a lot of junk on the drive bogging it down.
