Remember when veterans were old grizzly guys wearing olive drab jackets? Now they're younger than us. Some of them were in elementary school when we went to war.

Thanks to all who have served or who are currently serving in the US Military. We owe our freedom and way of life to you.

You're welcome (USAF, 1972-1976). I extend my own thanks to those others who served, and to those currently serving.

edit: also on behalf of my dad (U.S. Army, ETO, 1942-1945)

lol @ this thread.
I'm guessing most of you guys don't have a clue what today is about.

Today is a very special day. November 11 marks the end of fighting in World War 1. You're supposed to remember what WW1 was all about, why it started, and how it could have been avoided. The point is that millions of people died for nothing. The issue that caused that war was was not resolved by the time the war ended, and it's still not resolved today. The Balkans are still a region of constant battles and bullshit.

You guys beating your chest and having military parades just don't get it. That is the bullshit that started World War 1. Powerful countries were all flexing their muscles and showing off and none of them were willing to relax and work things out. Austria-Hungary's first response to terrorism was military action against Serbia. Russia responded by mobilizing the army and preparing for attack against Austria-Hungary. Rather than rethinking the situation and backing down, Austria-Hungary got full support from Germany to keep going. Germany and Austria-Hungary declaring war against Russia brought France into the war. Britain and France had a fairly good relationship, so Britain joined the war as well.

After 4 years of fighting and millions of people dead, nothing was gained. Austria-Hungary was broken apart, Germany was broken apart, Russia was overthrown and became the Soviet Union, and France and Britain both lost an entire generation of young men. All of that just to defend a group of state-supported Muslim Serbian terrorists who blew up the wtc killed the leader of a country.

This.

In Flanders Fields
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders Fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders Fields.

Oh damn, I was under the impression that Veteran's day was about honoring the Veterans that served and died for their country, and not about arguing the merit of the complex geopolitical situations leading to the conflicts in which these people were put.

Seriously, kid, you need to go fuck yourself.

Hey don't blame me because you failed grade 10, 11, and 12 history class.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veterans_Day
A federal holiday, it is observed on November 11. It is also celebrated as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in other parts of the world, falling on November 11, the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. (Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice.)

The most disgraceful thing about today is that people actually go on TV and on forums and claim that today is about remembering the fight for freedom. That is probably the most offensive thing anyone could ever say. When someone says that, they're saying WW1 was a good war, that it was worth fighting, and that it should be fought again if the issue happens again. It wasn't. WW2 was a good war; it was to stop fascism. Korea was a good war; it stopped communism. WW1 didn't stop shit. WW1 was just millions and millions of people dying for nothing. You need to remember that so it never happens again.

True, it started as Armistice day. However, over the years it evolved into the current Veteran's day where Veteran's are saluted for their service to the country.

I like the way you chose to leave this part out of your quote.

Veterans Day is an annual United States holiday honoring military veteranshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veterans.

I like the way you chose to leave this part out of your quote.

And you conveniently left this part out:

The U.S. President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed an Armistice Day for November 11, 1919. In proclaiming the holiday, he said

"To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with lots of pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations."[2]

It seems pretty clear cut what armistice day is about. Wilson was the WW1 president, the holiday marks the anniversary of the WW1 armistice, it was actually called armistice day, and in his speech he explicitly said it was about remembering the people who died.

Lower down it says
Congress amended this act on June 1, 1954, replacing "Armistice" with Veterans, and it has been known as Veterans Day since
Well wasn't that nice of them. What made WW1 so unique was that it was the biggest war in history and it was all for nothing. Most people can't even explain what WW1 was about or how it started. That was why it had its own holiday - so people would remember it. Luckily congress is there to gloss over something as important as that and make it just another meaningless holiday. :\

Please refer to the post before, I'm quite aware that it was originally Armistice Day. The fact of the matter the current Veteran's Day is to honor those who have served and why I posted what I did in the first post of this thread.

WWi was the first real war that the country stood together to fight.

We were just healing from the Spanish-American war and that was more a regional conflict, similar to the war of 1812.

There had been no other reference to WWI in scope that the US as a nation went to war for.

Congress wisely realized that the frame of reference was small at that time; WWII was even bigger and also realized that worse wars could happen down the line.

Rather than a rememberance day for each war, and then possibly ignoring small conflicts or those that prevented conflicts that could not be discussed, they chose to acknowledge those that served, now matter when or how.

The American Revolutionary War was a fairly significant war. The country stood together to fight against a super power and they won.

Go fuck yourself. Don't forget to report me either ratboy.

Just look at your own post history. Brown people from Africa to west Asia is all you ever rant about.
"You might want to go back and ask your Iranian handlers"
"Fuck Islam"
"Durka durka jihad is ok. Ten commandments is not"
"what a douche; looking like a ghetto.."

What's so ironic about you posting in this thread is that racism and nationalism are basically the root cause of WW1, which is what November 11 is supposed to be about. Guys like you think they're better than other races, other religions, and other cultures. Guys like you form terrorist groups. Guys like you start wars.
Much of the unrest in the Balkans has always been about race and religion. Why was Russia so quick to defend Serbia even though Serbia was a bunch of terrorists? Because the Serbs and Russians are both Slavic, and Russia was seen as the leader of the Slavic nations at the time.
