VF700-Cu or modded NV Silencer 5? to cool a 7900GT?

I've got my old NV Silencer 5 Rev. 3 sitting here, and a 7900GT and VF700Cu should arrive tomorrow.

Before I try them all out, does anybody have any personal experience or know which solution would yield better results?

I'll be overclocking, possibly with a mild vmod (1.3 or 1.4). If I used the VF700, I'd prefer silent mode, unless normal mode totally blows both cooling solutions out of the water.

Thanks!

You have to mod either the case or the NV Silencer to get it to work. Link
My preference would then be to go with the VF700Cu. No, I do not have expereince with the 7900, sorry about that. But the difference between the
two will be minimal even when o/c.

I know you didn't ask about it, but I just installed a VF900 on my 7900GT OC. I am now running at idle at 39C with 550 core and 800 mem (eVGA Superclock speeds).

The Zalman is MUCH quieter than stock! The stock HSF has a high-pitched whine to it.

Note: VF700's do not work as well if you don't have adequate ventilation. It just swirls the air inside the case and load temperatures will not be as good, also does not help case load temps. Only use if you have good ventilation, like 2 fans in the rear and good flow.

I used both a VF700 & NV5 Rev 3 on my 7800GT, switching to the NV after the VF700 left me with high load temps. The NV5 is also quieter IMO (not sure what fan setting the VF was on); idle temps are a few degrees higher, but load temps are 10-15C lower.

My vote is for the NV5, but that's up to you if you want to mod it

I think that's what I'll be leaning towards. I don't mind hacking off some of the NV Silencer w/ a hacksaw, and I can't imagine I'd have to mod much of my case to get it to fit in.

I prefer the DHES over just swirling the warm air around!

So, load temps were lower w/ the NV5, even though idle temps were higher?

The NV5 exhausts the heat of the case.

Use the NV Silencer, but cut a inch of it before doing it. Better than modding the computer case.

im guessing that at idle, gpu isnt prodiucing that mnuch heat so it is fine for the vf's but once it gets loaded, temperature of air around it also gets higher so the load will be higher then if you get consistant cool air out with the DHES

Cool. I think I'm going to go with the NV SIlencer, if I have some free time, I might try both and post results. Does anyone know EXACTLY how much to chop off the end of the DHES exhaust thing? 1 inch? I'd love to go ahead and do it before the Fedex guy gets here.

I'm looking forward to getting the exhaust as close to the back of the case as possible, on my old 6800's, it seemed like it was a half an inch or so from the back, not making the most out of the DHES theory.

It just got the NV5 Rev 3. for my 6800GS AGP, and love it. I'd personally use it over the Zalmann because the air gets moved directly out of the case. My case temps went down 4-5C after installing it. That's the most impressive aspect IMO.

I'm 99% sure you can. If it was mine, I would try. Basically, if you look at the 4 pin molex, the red is either 5v or 12v, the yellow is the other one, and the blacks are ground. You can see in the picture that they juts give you 2 choices of plugs.

You should be fine!

Even if I'm not, I just bought two anyway!

Yep, I don't see why not. All those things do is lower and/or vary the voltage going to the fan. You'd just want to make sure that the fan starts reliably at whatever voltage you're giving it if you undervolt by a lot.
