Not sure what to do with my 5800 ultra. The fan doesnt run in windows, and sounds like a turbine when running anything 3d. In windows without the fan running it runs like 65degrees celsius and is creating problems for the rest of the system. I just swapped in an mx440 and lowered the cpu (Opteron) temp by about 23F. I really like the performance of the card.

Has anybody tried the Zalman ZM80C-HP

Wow, 23C drop by switching video cards? Jesus, I had no idea they were THAT hot.

Don't get a Zalman for something that hot, that will still heat up your case. Go for the VGA Cooler, it will exhaust most of that hot air out the back of the case...

Wow, can't believe it's that hot.

The Zalman should be fine with the fan on there, assuming it will fit a 5800 Ultra.

Heh he said 23F not C , but if that was in celcius I would definitely kick the card to the curb . If you get the zalman make sure to get a fan with it.... it is highly recommended to have a fan with the heatpipe on 5800/5900 cards.

Most of the heat is from the ram, you'll neef ramsinks

With a card pumping out that much heat, it's better to get that heat out of the case w/ a VGA Silencer. I replaced a Zalman ZM80C-HP with a VGA Silencer. The Zalman just radiates heat into your case.

didnt think the actic vga silencer was supposed to fit those boards? my Rev 2 box only says ATI 9500, 9600, 9700 & 9800 (& pro versions) plus the Geforce 3 GTS. The latest version (rev 3) I think adds the 9600XT, maybe 9800XT.

no matter what kind of cooling you put on there it probebly wont drop your case temps, it will just drop your card temps and increase your card temps accordingly. i believe that the 5800 ultra already gas a back exhaust so putting a vga silencer wouldnt help much (even if you could get one to fit). the point im tryin to make is that the 5800 isnt even as good as the 9500, they just had to increase the clocks in crazy amounts to even get people to buy it. the 5900 series replaced it after 3 months because it bombed so bad.
get a 9800pro for $200.

Wow, you're really an idiot. First off, your credibility ended with "the 5800 isnt even as good as the 9500." I mean, come on. The 9500 was always a mid range card. The 5800 was a top end card.

And to say that all cooling raises case temperatures is just foolish. The Zalman doesn't move ANY air out of your case. It just heats up your case. The VGA Silencer blows air out the back, but it's a larger heatsink than the one that comes on the 5800.

You probably should get ramsinks though, since that DDR2 gets pretty warm.

Oh, and suggesting he buy a 9800pro... that's not a great solution. The 9800 isn't exactly leaps and bounds ahead of the 5800. It's maybe 15% faster...

Yeah i noticed that the zalman doesnt contact the ram, so i was planning getting mem-sinks at the same time. The card is whicked fast, it scores 16,000 in 3dmark 01 and can run unreal 2004 with everything on highest at 16x12 at a pretty solid 50fps. I thought the zalman would work out, because right now the fan doesnt run at all in windows so it just sits there and bakes. With the 80mm zalman it wouldt have a chance to simmer. The fan would also blow air on the mainboard chipset (sk8v) which would be good.

If i replace it I was planning on going iwth a 9800pro or a 5900xt, both of which are around 200bux and im not sure i want to spend that much on a new vidcard right now.

I was looking into the VGA Silencer, and as far as I can tell it wont work with my card.

when i said 9500 i meant one that can be modded to a 9700 (that really is my fault for not stating).

and video card cooling DOES raise case temps unless it has an OTES type design. think about it.... when the fan for the graphics card blows the heat away from the heatsink where does it go **circulates into the rest of the case**. and nowhere did i say anything about the zalman anyways.

and for the buying a 9800pro, he can probebly sell his 5800 for $150. that means that for an extra $50 he can get a cooler running video card (which is what he was complaining about) & a card which is more along the lines of 50% faster than the 5800 in some benchies.

sorry if you got a problem with what i said, but i see no reason to call me an idiot. i was just posting my opinion.

I had a pretty good reason for calling you an idiot, it's right here:

Do you know what the VGA Silencer is? At all? It is more or less a direct copy of the OTES system.

I'm sorry, I don't mean to be harsh, but you really should take the time to look something up before you talk about it...

I had the stock 5800U and had zero issues with heat. First thing I did was lower the 2D clockspeeds big time and put it in a case with a 12cm exhaust fan above it BTW, there were a set of DETs that had a force fan setting that was great. I can't figure out why they didn't keep that feature, I really liked it.

I am using coolbits to underclock the card in 2d mode and that does help some to lower temps. I thought of ways to install a fan to keep it cool in windows, but that would not fix the crazy loud fan noise when running something 3d. Im looking for a fix all aproach. I think the zalman would be the way to go if there is enough room to put ramsinks under it, as im pretty sure the ram would need it. Just not sure I want to mess with all that, and it would be a big pain if it didnt work..

The Zalman really is a great heatsink, it can handle hot cards since it has so much surface area. I use it on my 9700pro (which is way hotter than my 9600xt), but it needs a fan. The optional zalman fan would solve all of your problems.

Ok, when you get to the point of putting a fan on the Zalman, you're better off with the VGA Silencer. It's fan is quieter, and it actually exhausts hot air from your case. For the record, I do have the ZM80C-HP AND the OP-1 fan. It's louder with the fan (even @ 5v) than the VGA Silencer, plus it leaves the hot air in your case!
