Wasn't the PS3 the technically superior console between it and the XBox360? It still came down to titles, software and marketing in the end.

Yes, I know the PS3 eventually picked up in world-wide sales, but it got slaughtered for the first several years on release and never really caught up to the XBox360 in the US, despite being the technically superior console.

No, it came down to the complexity of the Cell processor and the difficulty programming for it. Now that the PS4 is using x86 architecture and Sony is focusing on its development tools to make it easier to write code for it, hardware specs should paint a clearer picture of what the console is truly capable of.

Also remember Microsoft got the jump on Sony last gen and released the 360 way before Sony had a chance to release the PS3. Microsoft definitely rushed the product to market (evident by the high failure rate of their launch systems), but the gamble paid off for them. It definitely gave MS a good head start on Sony, and made it difficult for them to catch up.

Except for the Blu-ray drive, no. Sony tried to be fancy and picked a complicated architecture that was great in theory but no better than the 360 in practice. The PS4 appears to be a much more sensible architecture.

That's something I mentioned in the other PS thread. It's interesting to see how they're going to price it this time around as the past two generations had a new movie disk standard that helped justified the price. I know of many people that bought at launch because it was also a blu-ray player. This time around neither one has that advantage or disadvantage and it's all down to games and (what a lot of 'hard core gamers' hate) the features like apps and what not.

At the end of the day, I will end up with both as long as MS doesn't screw up. For me, it's all about deciding which one i want to get day one and which one i will wait on for awhile. I like having the option to play all the exclusives. With that being said, I justified spending the money on the ps3 because it was also a blu-ray player, but now they will both have that ability.

This is only my opinion but generally PlayStation has had better exclusives these past two generations compared to Xbox. I enjoy my Xbox and buy my multi platform games on it but I'll definitely be picking up the PS3 first because of the exclusives unless in between now and release, Microsoft wows me with features and games.

People that are saying they are done with consoles if this happens, what are you going to play? PC has always been this way, so I don't see why it is ok for PC to not have used games but it isn't for consoles.

Gamestop, and the entity formerly known as electronics boutique, both used to have a used PC game market... trade in...buy used.
ea singlehandedly killed that as too many people bought used copys of the sims and the secondary buyers were locked out of patches and updates as you could not register the serial again. even with a legit sales slip.

I own a 360. I'm absolutely open to getting a PS4.

I will say now I highly doubt its raw power is going to be 50% better. However, if it is, I'll be very hard pressed not to get it. I would always feel like I'm getting a short end of the stick otherwise, and if this thing is as easy to develop for as it seems it will be, the "360 vs ps3" comparisons that you can find now and that show virtually no difference (360 generally a touch better) will all be a little embarrassing for the 720.

The only problem that I'm going to run into is... what do I do with my 360 and PS3? I have a fairly modest collection of games for both systems, and I'm not sure if there's really room for five other items (four consoles + HTPC) in my entertainment center as my center channel speaker and Ethernet switch also reside there.

I guess it's one of those "I have too much crap" problems.

I've always been hardcore gamer on my pc and used nintendos offerings to get their side of the coin. XBOX next will be my next gaming device and ill drop the others. PC gaming is now a derivative fom console trajectory so the investment to separate graphic fidelity above what the next consoles will deliver is not worth it to me. Also prefer to game on HDTV.

For me the choice comes down to controller (much prefer MS's offering, appears Nintendo agrees with their knockoff) and secondarily game offerings. I doubt graphics are going to be much different on either console and with AAA gaming develop costs it's suicide for most developers to go exclusive. If either console delivers a must have game ill get on board.

We all know how deep the BS will get leading upto release regarding performance and nobody is worse than Sony for overstating their numbers. Sony has edge on games at this point, but MS hasn't countered yet.

The 32meg cache/buffer can cancel some of the memory bandwidth advantage.

And Microsoft can afford to fight sony on price, with cheaper hardware and more money to burn.

What they also need is more exclusives.

Online might not be free on the next PlayStation which I don't have to problem with as long as it's quality.

Yes, there was an old leaked specs document that made this claim (well, I don't think it said they would look better) - but we have no idea if those were really final specs or if the document was even true in the first place.

Yeah, I am kind of in the same boat. I have two friends that own both systems now, but do most if not all of their gaming on the 360, so I am guessing they will move on to the next Xbox.
