now that Ive thought about the whole personal video recorder deal. AIW radeon seems to be a better deal. you get a TV tuner, radeon card, mpeg2 decoder, and PVR software.

yuo can also use the AIW radeon to convert VHS movies to CD. in broadcast quality mpeg2 nonetheless.

Anybody receive this yet? I ordered from Buy.com a couple of days ago but it hasn't shipped (that I can tell). I am anxious to see how it works!!

I just got this bad boy shipped to me earlier today! I been playing around with it all day. These are the results. It doesn't work well in windows 2k. This may be becuase I loaded my windows 2k with a bunch of shiznit. There may be a driver conflict. In windows 98 se this thing works like a champ. I can capture d1 broadcast quality (720 x 480; 5mb/s) without missing a frame. No sync problems. Capturing standard SVCD is not as good as software encoding. The software to comes with it is awesome. You can use Ulead video studio to capture, edit, cut, merge, title, add music, and add effects. If you capture with Ulead video studio, it will convert to about any video format you desire. Maybe not divx though. Ulead makes SVCDs by capturing d1 broadcast quality then encoding it. This makes a very high quality SVCD, but does take some time. I captured Scary Movie DVD and didn't see any effects of macrovision. Does this movie have macrovision? Anyways this is just my experience with it on the first day. I'll let you know if anything else comes up. This is a quality product and for the price I would say it's a flaming hot deal. It sure beats my ATI All in Wonder Raiden.

Thanks for getting back to us. This is sure tempting. I already have a VIVO video card, but that hardware decoder sounds tempting.

Anyone else buy this?

Virus, thanks for the update.

Does the AUDIO go through the USB port or does it connect to the soundcard input?

I have a AIW Radeon but it is useless for good captures. Synch problems and dropped frames.

Mine should be here tomorrow. It better work PERFECT with WinXP (your comment about Win2K troubles me a little). BTW, buy.com has this item as "on backorder" currently

I don't see how this is possible. I use my ATI AIW Radeon to capture video sources all the time. I use VirtualDub and the HuffyUV codec for a non-lossy 480x480 capture. I use a third party MPEG compressor and Nero to burn it to CD-R. The entire procedure is here in good detal.

A 5MB sample, in SVCD quality, of this procedure is available here

And my Radeon is decent on 3D gaming as well. Try *that* with your new toy.

maetryx:
if you capture at 480x480, dont you lose some video? Does the video get cut off?
Does it squeeze the image wrong? TV and Monitors display the image in retangular
dimensions.

No, you don't lose any picture, but the resolution and quality are lower...about VHS quality probably.

Audio is captured through the soundcard. I encountered a sync problem on one instance when I ran the captured video through TMPG, but it only happened once. I've done it many times since then and not a problem.

Got mine in yesterday and it works very well. Quality is very good. Audio/video synch is perfect.

I'm very pleased. Much, much better (and cheaper) than the Dazzle MPG2 hardware encoder.

Well I have the ATI AIW Radeon and it records, but after 20 or so minutes it FREEZES the computer :| and of course I lose the 20 minutes. Anyone that can give me any tips? I did a clean install of Windows already. I have a PIII 500MHZ, 768 megs SDRAM, 2 hard drives (30gig+20gig), WinME.

Is it worth it to buy a P4 1.4 gigger or wait a few months? How easy is to port all my stuff to a barebones, just disconnect and reconnect?

Thanks!

NevadaGator, If you're thinking of upgrading your pc to capture video, don't. It's not worth it. I built a whole new system to capture video and it didn't improve the capture quality. I would suggest that you get the instant dvd. If you must upgrade, stay away from intel. Go with AMD, much faster and cheaper.

Ok now found this cheaper at buy.com. So deal is getting hotter!

But is this any good for the money?

I'm looking forward to putting my vhs on digital media as well but its going to take more patience. 1 hour max is useless, not to mention lack of digital recording. I say give it another year and we'll have a nice selection with nice prices, and then its time for the MJ playoff collection to get digitized...

Whats the max amount of video that can fit on a DVDR? I'm looking to archive all my old Kungfu serials that are around 30-40 hours each. A lot are on beta, and machines are getting hard to find, and VHS gets crappier after every viewing.

Dazzle makes a DV- BRIDGE that converts analog to DV and passes to the computer via Firewire. It also converts DV from camcorder to analog. LINK. Does anybody know how the Dazzle compares to the USBAV-700 USB Instant DVD in terms of quality and features?

I've been looking for a solution (my AIW was a dissapointment) for a while now and was about to get the Dazzle .
