Just wondering about the VIA 4in1 drivers... Should I install em? and what exactly to they do?

I have a MSI Geforce 2 mx 32mb
cant seem to find any drivers for the card anymore!
So windows XP installs the Geforce2mx/mx400 driver..? is that ok? (I suppose I dont really have a choice.
also.

thanks...

I love Epox!

Oldfoof I always use Nvidia default drivers and so do most members here, you can download them from
here ,if you are just using XP default drivers you can just install them, however if you installed MSI drivers it`s best to remove them first.

As for your 4 in 1 driver question, you don`t need to,it only updates the Inf and PCI IDE driver I believe when I installed them ,so it`s really up to you,I always do since I like to have the latest drivers.

Remember WinXP has native support for VIA chipsets(so that`s why you don`t have to install them)

as to your other question on what they do,taken from VIA Hardware,

<< VIA has been offering their 4-in-1 driver for quite some time now. It is designed to solve all compatibility problems with Microsoft OS's and VIA chipsets. As MS has traditionally provided very little support for third party chipsets, the chipset manufacturers must provide their own patches.

Notes:

Do not update 4-1 drivers unless you are experiencing problems.

Microsoft Windows XP has native XP support and 4-1 drivers usually are not needed.

If you mean VIA drivers don`t worry most WinXP owners that have, had no problems including myself.

there is another version of the detonators (23.12) that is

<< rumored >>

to help the booting issues with some MX series GF vids. I can't substantiate the benefit, except to say I am running them and they seem no different than the 23.11's on this setup. (I am stable with either)

you can get them here if you want to give'em a try.

note: the RivaTuner is a nice tweaker for the 60Hz fix and Oc'ing. if you want it, it's there too.

The VIA 4-in-1 drivers are chipset drivers which should be installed if you motherboard is based on a VIA chipset.

bfg10k you kill me DO NOT UPDATE YOUR 4 IN 1s PPL. all it does is cause major slow downs. it increases the hard drive cache which improves stability but ruins gaming and while were at gaming the 4 in 1s dont update the agp drivers in windows xp you have to get the 4.10 agd update.......and if you have installed the 4 in 1 i recommend you completely reinstall xp stay standard on the via stuff but install the via agp update alone

We are on the subject of WinXP and VIA 4 in 1 drivers right,so officially you don`t need to install them(since XP has native VIA support) ,the recommendation I believe is if it`s not broken don`t fix it.

Now on the subject of if you do or don`t,well it`s up to you really, if you want to try it fine however it only updates the INF file and PCI IDE driver(which you can deselect from install on the 4.37 drivers),I`ve also installed the VIA AGP 4.10 driver(downloaded and installed on it`s own) which gave me a small increase in speed,I also read that probably it will be included in the next VIA 4 in 1 drivers.

Gaming wise I`ve had no problems all rock solid etc, however as we have seen here when people install VIA 4 in 1 drivers some get good and others get bad results so the bottom line is it`s really is up to you.

As I said I like to have the latest drivers so that`s the reason why I install them.

I'm starring in that movie. I was worried installing XP (infinite loop error), so I did no updates to 4-in-1's and have been using latest nVidia released drivers.

So far, about a month into it. No hard crashes, no blue screens. Diablo2 locked up and I had to reboot once.

I'll wait until the verdict is IN on 4-in-1 updates.

Just to put my two cents in. I updated my xp machine with the latest via 4in1 and gained about 30 points in 3dmark2001. I know this is marginal and means nothing but it does prove to me anyway that thier is no slow down.

I think it also depends what MB you have. With my EP-8K7A+ the 4-1's have been a disaster. But my
MB is a mutt. If you have a Via chipset Board I'm sure the 4-1's work fine like BFG mentioned.

Run the install program again, it will give you the option to uninstall each one of them

Oldfoof,

If your WinXP is working fine then leave the VIA drivers installed, you can sometimes do more harm uninstalling them like if the uninstall goes wrong.

<< hhumm , cant find that option >>

Remember when you installed them, it had the check box for each set of drivers to select install? Well you will also see a checkbox for uninstall if you run the program (it is on each individual section, not a splash at the beginning)
