Taken from viahardware

"UPDATE VIA has informed me that this has been the official company line from the beginning. The original statement, which was identical to this, was issued on May 2nd. Perhaps me and HardOCP are a bit behind. The fixes have already been integrated into the latest 4in1 driver.

To whom it may concern:

During the past few weeks, problems were reported on several web sites stating that one of VIA?s chipset has compatibility issue with Creative SoundBlaster Live PCI Sound card. After debugging, verifying, and checking compatibility between our VT82C686B and other devices, we concluded that the problem is not totally related to our chipset. We found that the system problem will happen only under certain configurations and certain procedures, and only occur under Athlon processor based systems with VT82C686B chipset and Creative SB Live card. We also checked whether our chipset has any compatibility issues in other configurations, and the result was we did not find any such compatibility issues.
The configuration is described as follows: One IDE HDD ATA-100 or one ATA-66 HDD and enable default DMA mode; one IDE DVD-ROM and enable fault DMA mode; one Creative SB Live PCI sound card; one VGA card; and copy file, W2KSP2.exe (Win2K service pack2).
Consequently, we also developed a new IDE driver to resolve the compatibility issue with the Creative SoundBlaster sound card, and this IDE driver will be posted at our website for users who have Athlon based systems using this configuration.

Best regards,

VIA Technologies, Inc."

I have no idea if this is real... but if it is will they make a new revision for the 686b?

Too bad it is a bunch of crap!!! I believe I saw a statement at viahardware months ago before via came out with 4 in 1's version 4.31...it is old!!!

How do they explain issues similar happening on intel/ via chipset machines...How do they explain this doesn't happen on as much or at all on certain mobos as compared to others, all with same 686b chipset??? Actually reported similar problems without sblive cards at all...

"problem is not totally related to our chipset. "Just passing the buck...

They better get someone else to fix it because they sure as hell can't write drivers. I'm still pissed about the latest 4in1's hosing my system.

This announcement is old news. There's no need for a new chipset revision because the latest 4-in-1's fixed the problem weeks ago.

Do you still have a Via chipset? I went with a 815ep for now... It willl hold me over till, well, I dunno.

edit: My system has not been rebooted for a week (Win2K) with the Via KT133 I would only get a couple of days before wierd sh!t started happening. This thing is ROCK solid. Overclocked too.

How the hell could a driver fix a chipset fault? Sure they can minimize the problems, but if this really is a design fault no drivers could fix this to work as it should in the first place.

I've heard mixed results about this fix. For some it works, but for others, it didn't help at all.
