VIA C3 Processor

hi guys.. What do u guys think about the processor from Via? How better or worse it is if it is compared to AMD and Intel Processor? Will this Processor have a bright future?

VIA/Cyrix has always trailed in performance in FPU and MMX operations, and the C3 is no exception. VIA's positioning the processor as a cool, low-power device for mainly office productivity and web surfing, not for hard core 3D gamers. I'm interested in it for the possibilities of a silent computer with no fan on the heatsink (does anyone know which of the various speeds can use just a passive heatsink?). It's too bad that the C3 and heatsinks for it are so hard to find in the US.

Doesn't it just use regular P3 heatsinks? I thought it used the P3 socket. I saw some of these chips for sale on pricewatch.

Its a socket 370 config, so I would imagine it would take a socket HSF. I wanna OC one....NO heat at strock speeds...up the volts and fsb......pry would cook.

The Cyrix-3 800MHz runs equivalent to a Celeron anywhere from 500-766MHz depending on the benchmark test. It runs quite alot cooler, and as alot of integrated systems on the market prove, doesn't require a fan on the heatsink while running. If you want a silent PC its a great choice. If you want a gaming PC then there are better alternatives like the Celeron-Taulatin.

I have a C3 800 in my Shuttle SV24 system and it works fine. The only flaw I see is very low benchmarks and the "core" (?) is very wide. You know how on Pentium and Athlon's, the little cpu part is raised and measures like 3x3 cm? Well there is no such part on the C3. Instead it covers nearly the entire cpu, leaving a border of say 1/2 cm around the perimeter. For some reason this makes putting on a socket 370 heatsink very challenging.
