The nForce 2 has the edge in performance plus you get the nForce 5.1 sound and firewire. The VIA KT400 will be replaced in a few months by the VIA KT400a ,if I was buying right now then the nForce 2 would be my choice between the two.

I'd wait for the big Nforce 2 roundup that should be up soon. Make your desision after reading that (it'll also help you pick which manufacture to go with).

Definitely the Nforce2 since VIA is not out with the Kt400A

But once KT400A rolls around. everyone WATCH OUT!

that should be a sweet chipset.

Just me but I would pass on both and wait for something better like the KT400a

I haven't been following these things lately....what's gonna make 400a so much better than 400?

It'll most likely have Dual channel ddr support
ddr400 "official" support
and be able to handle a 200mhz fsb without running the pci bus outta spec (good for overclockers and for the upcoming barton core when it gets a 200mhz fsb)

basically it will do everything that the nforce2 is doing now and hopefully add a good bit of performance

basically kt266a was a great chipset

then kt333 added very little
then kt400 added very little yet again

hopefully kt400a adds more than very little cause it's due

and via is losing market share like crazy if they can't answer the nforce2 with a great product then they are in even more trouble
since they have basically lost the P4 chipset market, have never really held any market share with their C3, and are now losing to sis and nvidia in the Athlon chipset area.

I dont know, I would go with the Nforce, esp since IMO, VIA chipsets and drivers seem like they are always running into conflicts with a lot of hardware.

What has made nForce2 much faster than KT400 has been it's drivers, not dual DDR memory capabilities. nForce2 is still noticably faster than KT400 in single channel mode, and that's mostly due to drivers.

I too am trying to decide between the VIA KT400 and the nForce2. I don't plan on using the onboard audio. Instead I plan on using SB Audigy 2. It sounds like the nForce2 chipset would be the way to go? Oh, I plan on getting the XP 2100+ processor.

Does anybody know when the VIA KT400a chipset will be released? I more than likely won't be purchasing a mobo for another month or two, so this post may be useless.

TIA

Welp, based on some reading and some test results I've seen, it would appear that the conclusion is as follows:

Since I plan on getting the XP2100+ processor (266MHz FSB), the chipset to go with is the VIA KT400. If I were to go with the XP2700+ or newer (333MHz FSB), than the chipset to go with is the NVIDIA nForce2. It seems that the nForce2 chipset likes it best when the CPU FSB and the RAM FSB are the same. The VIA KT400 combined with a CPU with a FSB of 266MHz and DDR333 RAM outperformed the nForce2 combined with a CPU with a FSB of 266MHz and either DDR266 or DDR333 RAM. But, the nForce2 combined with a CPU with a FSB of 333MHz and DDR333 RAM outperformed the VIA KT400 with a CPU with a FSB of 333MHz and DDR333 RAM.

Looks like VIA KT400 for me.
