VIA VT1708S Sound

I just ordered a mobo which has VIA VT1708S. Does anyone know what kind of performance hit this audio has, if any for headphone gaming? Should I invest in an add-on card?

I think that's a first generation HD audio chip from VIA. If it works properly (which is somewhat driver dependant) and there's no background hiss, go ahead and use it. I'd say try it out and if you're unhappy then upgrade. No need to pay the money first.

BTW, what motherboard is it?

I originally ordered a Gigabyte board that had Realtek audio, it was however DOA so I went with this.

While I haven't seen any sort of performance hit from that chip, I just recently switched to a motherboard with that chip and I can say that, at least in my experience, the sound on it is pretty awful. I moved from an ultra-low-end Audigy SE card to the VT1708S, and the sound seems very tinny and without much depth at all. It works moderately OK for TF2 (which is pretty much all I play these days) on headphones, but for music, it's atrocious.
