Question Viability of 8700K for gaming

Hi everyone. I have an older computer, but it is still my gaming machine. It has an 8700k at 4.9 ghz, and a gtx 1060 6gb. I know the gpu is ancient, and am looking to replace it with a new low power mid range card, perhaps an RTX 4060. My question: is the 8700k still viable for gaming, and for how much longer? Would it pair decently with a gpu like the 4060? I game at 1080p, and plan to stick with that resolution. I have 16gb or RAM, not sure the speed, something like 3000 I think. I play single player, off line, so I dont need an ultra high framerate. The main game I play is BG3, but I would like to play Black Ops 6, perhaps Cyberpunk 2077. I have played a bit of Vielguard, and it looks like crap. (Unfortunately, the gameplay and story is crap too.)

Use a VRR display and you should do okay for a while yet. No way of knowing when an 8700K is going to stop being able to provide the experience you personally are okay with. It is already on the struggle bus in some CPU heavy titles though. Turn down crowds and traffic in games like cyberpunk, that will help.

Yea, I thought my comp was handling BG3 pretty well at med/high settings, and I could get much better performance with a gpu only upgrade. After reading about the cpu being limiting in the Lower City, I checked the frame rate, and it was usually about 45 fps, dropping close to mid 30s in the lower city with lots of crowds on the screen. I just didn't notice because it is not a fast twitch game. I do notice some screen tearing also. I just sort of assumed an 8700k would be good for a few more years with a gpu upgrade, but I guess it is closer to being outdated than I thought.

If you want something a more powerful but inexpensive, scout the for sale forum here and at techpowerup, some good deals on LGA 1700 pop up here and there. Nothing else makes sense, unless you buy a 5700X3D from AliExpress with coupon for $130 or so. You already have ram for either build, and 5 series boards can also be found dirt cheap.

I would def upgrade the GPU first and see if you are OK with it. The 1060 is holding performance back more.

I agree. And the 4060 is a big upgrade. When you then get a CPU, it may last even then for a while.
