The FiveFingers have typically been an easier transition for those that are flat-footed, in my experience. However, if you're hitting with your forefoot and not heelstriking or anything, I think you'll be fine. It may take some time getting used to though.

I'm still having trouble breaking mine in. I'm not really wearing them around the house day to day, maybe I should be doing that? I can run for like 15 minutes in them fine, but after that I blister.

In Soviet Russia, the vibrams break you in.

Seriously though, using VFF's is all about learning a different running technique, so if you blister up after 15 minutes, it most likely means your foot landing isn't quite right and/or your feet need more time to adapt. I still screw up the foot landing from time to time myself, but when I get it right, I can run 10k+ in them with no real blistering.

So how does switching to VFF affect my running with sneakers once I adapt to the VFFs? I've been thinking about using VFFs for treadmill running but am afraid of what it may do to my form with running shoes once the weather gets better.

Running properly with VFFs is primarily about learning to land on the midfoot instead of the heel. I'm not sure why you'd go back to normal running shoes when "the weather gets better", but you can still use the same technique when wearing normal running shoes. Of course, if your running shoes have a massive, padded heel, it might be a little tough to not land on it first, but it can be done with practice.

I was thinking about using VFFs only for when I run on the treadmill at the gym when it's too cold out or snowing. What I meant is that when spring comes around 2010 when I run outdoors again for the first time after a hiatus, I'm wondering if my running then will be affected if I go back to running shoes. As for why I would switch back to running shoes at all for outdoor running is that I'm not very comfortable with the level of protection the VFFs will provide. I live in NYC and the paths that I run, I often encounter glass shards, gravel and the like.

Again, to run in VFFs, you will most likely need to learn a different running technique than what you use in sneakers. It takes a while to develop this technique and while you'll probably benefit in the long term from it, it is likely that early on, your running will suffer. If you go back to sneakers, you can either continue using this technique or go back to heel to toe running. I haven't tried switching between the two - and honestly, I don't see any reason to go back to heel-to-toe running - but I imagine it wouldn't be that hard.

Don't knock it till you try it.

Not knocking it, it's just my initial reaction. For all I know, I might find I prefer them and give them a go outdoors. Anyway I don't run heel to toe with sneakers though I don't think... will have to confirm on my run tomorrow.

In my experience, stepping on sharp rocks and small/hard objects is not pleasant in VFFs, but not a big deal (especially as your feet get tougher) and generally easy to avoid. I personally haven't stepped on glass shards (even though I ran around streets in a number of large cities, including Boston, Berlin and San Fran) but I doubt it would cut through the VFFs.

As for heel striking... you'll know you're doing it as soon as you try to run in VFFs, I promise
