No it's not an ad. I'm getting a student loan to pay for this sucker assuming they get the "x2" CPU in July. Cant wait to get this sucker. Hopefully the screen will be capable of 1600x1200 as well.

Why not just go and get a Dell XPS M1710? If you really want a laptop, i.e. something you can carry with you, it'd be better to have something with less graphics horsepower but will actually fit in a bag! I also suspect the M1710 will last more than 5 minutes on battery power. It already has a 1920x1200 screen.

Also, that Magnum SLI laptop has a 1680x1050 widescreen display; that's the functional equivalent of 1600x1200.

Thanks for the suggestion but I'm pretty set on a 19" screen. I play games at various places like Wahammer Dawn of War and Empire at War... I will also wait til ViciousPC or a company like Alienware offers a 1600 x 1200 rez with the Turian Dual Core.

I received this response from WidowPC on the 5th of June WidowPC 19" Notebook:

Mike,

We're looking into putting Turion x2's in there, but there will never be an Athlon x2 in the 919. There's just too much heat and it would require a motherboard redesign. There's currently no timetable on the Turion x2's, sorry.

Let me get this straight.

You are getting a student loan so you can buy a laptop to play games on?

You don't need to have a masters in economics to figure out that there is something wrong with this plan of action.

If you value your education, get a solid laptop with integrated graphics, long battery life and a nice screen. Should not cost more than $1200 or so. Puts you in a lower end apple, thinkpad, dell lattitude etc...

I do. I currently have a 3.875 GPA. I had a 4.0 but Biology 101 knocked me down a peg last semester. Other than games... I use photoshop a lot and taking Autocad in early 2007. National Guard has a student loan repayment program so I dont have to pay back the whole thing out of pocket when I graduate. This will be my only student loan I will have to take. I want a laptop that will last me the next 2-3 years without having to buy another. Money is not much of an issue as listed below.

GI BILL: $1200/mo tax free (includes Iraq Vet kicker)
$250/mo as a Sergeant; 1 drill weekend
$120/wk P/T working as a student IT asst.
Free tuition via National Guard

Toy Soldier,

You are an American hero: Anyone who served his country in Iraq is a super American. I retired from the Navy and salute you!

Back to your notebook and your money: I would buy something you can get locally and get fixed locally: I buy from Best Buy, COMPUSA, Circuit City or a local Virginia store. and don't own stock in any of these stores. I concur with what others have said: Go with Toshiba, Acer, or Gateway. Stay away from Dell- bad customer support reputation per Business Week.

Go with a minimum of 1GB DDR2 RAM, internal hard drive space is not a driving requirement as you can buy a 300 GB external drive for less than $200 on sale, make sure you have at least 4 USB 2.0 ports, a multimedia reader, firewire connection, a wireless laser mouse, and try to stick with Intel Dual Centrino. AMD runs hotter; I have a desktop with AMD 64 and my computer room is hot.

Make sure you get all CDs that are needed to reload your hard drive-like the MS Windows, video drivers, etc.

Good luck,

Ed

First off, thank you for your service to our country.

It's hard to justify one of these behemoths when you can get a high end gaming setup and a nice, slim notebook for far less than $4000. What happens down the line when the hardware becomes outdated? You can't just gut the entire thing, you'd be back to square one.

That's just my $0.02.

Thanks. After volunteering for 2 tours in Bosnia and my last tour in Iraq as M249 Saw Gunner... it's time to finish my BS in Computer Science. If your REALLY bored your welcome to check out some Pics I took over there on my Webpage: http://www.mikelovesbrie.com/Pics%20Index.htm I also have a cool video link of an Iraqi sand storm on the main page

I think I'm leaning more towards WidowPC and no less than 2 Gig Ram... imo opinion they as reputable as Alienware... if not more so than the "main streamers". The CEO / Owner of WidowPC is pretty famous in the Computer Geek areana. The screen rez may not be high enough even when the new line comes out. I'm set on 1600 x 1200 or higher. 16x12 is too much for a 17" screen... about perfect for a 19" plus it puts the 7900gtx SLI to good use. It also makes Autocad and Potoshop much easier to navigate while editing multiple windows.

I'm also an A+ certified Computer Tech to which I work P/T at my college. I'll get a 3 year warranty and replace the parts myself if the need arises.

That's just my $0.02.

These systems tend to be component upgradeable. Including the video cards. WidowPC is installing a new motherboard in their 19" line but unfortunately the screen size is probably gonna be less than 16x12. I wont buy it if it stays that way after their July/Aug upgrade.

Aftre 3 years... I'll just sell it on ebay. Or keep it around as a back up. I cant see a x2 CPU.... 7900gtx SLI.... 100GB 7200rpm... 2 Gb Ram as being "unusable" in 3 years.

I rebuild/sell Pentium III 700Mhz and low end Pentium 4 systems for family use even today. I usually buy then thru state auctions... max out the ram... add a NIC if necessary sell them as MS Word 2000 / DSL Cable Internet cruisers.

I respect that opinion but after carrying a M249 Machine Gun everywhere I went w/400 rd load in Iraq for a year.... both inside and outside (800rd load) the wire... big is a personal opinion. To me a 15lb Notebook is not much for me (6' 3" 220lbs)... probably for most people.

I dont get some people. There are many out there who want a 17" or 19" gaming notebook. Claims have been made that they are too large or too heavy for keeping as a notebook (or laptop for that matter). Here's the deal: people buy them because their big. Just because something is mobile doesnt mean it has to be ultra portable or anything. I'm a gamer and a very mobile person (VERY mobile) and I honestly wouldnt mind a high performance notebook such as the Dell XPS M1710. Sure, it seems big, but its really not, especially for someone who wants the larger screen size. In short, people generally know what they want before the buy it, especially coming from AT.

I'm a college student myself and am planning to get myself a notebook probably around this X-mas, either the Asus 14.1" W3J or the Apple MacBook 13.3" (Black). If I could afford the M1710, I would get it, but I dont want to be further into debt, even with student loans.
