Ok...on my DESKTOP.

Windows XP Pro gets to startup screen. Keyboard works. Mouse doesn't. Enter password and gets to desktop. No mouse movement.

1) Mouse was plugged into keyboard USB port. Plugged directly into mobo USB port to test. Mouse doesn't work.
2) Plugged mouse into LAPTOP. Mouse works fine.
3) Switched mouse to different USB port on keyboard on desktop. Mouse doesn't work.
4) Plugged mouse into USB port the keyboard was working on. Mouse doesn't work.
5) Plugged keyboard into other USB port. Keyboard works.
6) Mouse is getting power. Optical lights up on motion.

Embarrassed. Help please.

Edit: I should mention that my desktop has worked fine for 2 years now, so this is NOT a new install/build.

In device manager do you see drivers for your mouse?

If the mouse is there I would try removing it & then have windows try & redetect the mouse.

that's weird, why would it work in an other pc & not there.

And you confirmed that the usb works because you plugged a usb keyboard & it works, even more confusing.

What mouse is it exactly?

have you tried installing the mouse software? eg intellipoint software ( if microsoft mouse)

Intellipoint software will work even if it's not an MS mouse.
Helps a lot of mouse problems.

Thanks for the help so far...just wanted to say I'm in the midst of a 6.2MB download for Intellipoint. I'll update soon!

It's strange how XP is not automatically recognising the mouse and using the generic driver! Have you changed any settings in the BIOS. I know you said your KB is working, but in the BIOS is USB Function on, Legacy USB Support enabled, USB 2.0 Controller enabled?

Perplexed...you bet! :frown:

[edit]

If the mouse is not shown in the device manager, installing the driver won't work will it? Wonder if there is a voltage problem all of a sudden?

Do you happen to have a USB -> PS/2 converter? Granted it should work in its native USB mode, but you've tried all the things I would have tried. Maybe I should be embarassed too.

This is NUTS!

1) When you go to the "Mouse" portion of the Control Panel and go to "Hardware"...nothing exists!
2) There is no "Mice and other pointing devices" in the Hardware Manager.
3) Upon booting, the mouse and keyboard light up.
4) AFTER the Windows splash screen momentarily blinks away, and BEFORE the login screen, the mouse light goes off.
5) The mouse light STAYS off until I unplug the mouse from the USB port and then REPLUG the mouse into the USB port.
6) Once the light is on, it stays on, LIGHTS UP during movement...but no moving mouse pointer!

New Information: I have a yellow exclamation point on the USB Root Hub portion in the Device Manager menu. When highlighted, it says "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39). When I go to the Driver tab and choose Update Driver, it cannot find a better match.

Sorry for the ignorance.

Delete the USB Controllers in the Control Panel and reboot. U will lose use of the KB if you do this and may need to "hard reset" the computer.

Try device manager and 'scan for hardware changes' or something of that nature maybe it'll detect the mouse then.

What about a PS/2 mouse?
