The Hauppage WinTV-D is flaming red hot. It's going for $49 on that site, it's msrp is $299, and pricegrabber doesn't find anything lower than about $270. I presume it is mispriced.

It's going for around $35 on the largest auction site (can't say the name for some reason on this thread) - be careful here that you're talking about the right item.

What does this card do? Does it allow one to get HDTV on the computer? Is HDTV available now? I have a pinnacle PCTV Pro card now.

Hey, this looks like a pricing error, and the email confirmation clearly says 5 different ways that they won't honor pricing errors

marschw -- why don't you delete your mention... maybe if only 20 or 30 get ordered, they won't notice If we keep this info up forever, 5000 will get ordered ("I'll sell 10 on eGay and pay for my trip to Mexico" crap that we've seen in the past)...

So far this looks good to me. I hope I get my card. But I just noticed something. Why is it a $275 dollar card if it can only allow you to watch TV? Sure it has capture but it's not a true capture card like the other ones. It's just marketed to watch tv! For nearly 300 dollars! That makes no sense!

Welcome to HDTV, where everything is expensive

It captures as well as the other H* cards.... you have to have a fast CPU and hard drive, it doesn't do any compression on the card.

I agree that we should either delete the mention on the wintv-d card or delete this thread all together. This will surely get killed as many will order it for egaying.

mrVW, I want to get another capture card I can actually use to hook up to a vcr as well as my cable, etc. What would you recommend. I am assuming you know something about this stuff.

What do you want to capture to? MPEG2, MPEG4 (DivX), general AVI...

A "dumb" board like the WinTV is best -- as you can use software (including newer codecs) to do it... but you need a good CPU and a good hard drive system (good controller, good fast disk). You typically capture UNCOMPRESSED which eats up disk like crazy... then you compress it offline.

The $40 WinTV (Have one right in front of me on the desk) is a decent brooktrout board. Radeon and other boards work too... but may or may not have a tuner.

You mention your VCR... you wouldn't need a tuner for that.

If you have a non digital cable system, one of these boards can be used to get "free" pay cable channels http://www.vci.net/bildun/tv500/ -- I don't even have cable, but I found this link when looking for drivers a few months back.

Can that WinTV card capture in MPEG2 @ a user specified resolution? (352x288?) I want to capture at that resolution and burn it to CDR for use in my DVD player. Will that Hauppage card do that?

mrVWI want to capture to MPEG2 or MPEG4. Actually, what does it matter? Don't all boards capture raw video (AVI) and then you have to go convert it? If that is the case, whatever I choose to convert to will be dependent on me right? I don't know much about this but I know I want to be able to watch tv/cable (non digital). I also want to be able to record live TV. Lastly, I think a breakout box would be nice where I can hook up a camcorder or dvd player or vcr to watch/record from. I don't want to spend too much but I don't like buying cheap budget components either. Thanks for your help.

sygyzy,

Dazzle digital video creator 2

Mpeg 2 capture card with a breakout box

The hardware is great but you have to figure out something later. If you want PNP(Plug in play), forget it.

It uses the same chip(dvxplore) as in matrox R2000($1000) and pinnacle dv500(?)

sygyzy: you have the right idea... just keep in mind that the CAPTURE ITSELF takes a lot more computer resources when you have a "dumb card" and not one that does MPEG2. Personally I recommend going the "dumb card" route -- one that does NOT do MPEG or any other compression... as new software is coming along all the time to do better and better compression.

If you are doing your own stuff for archive, I highly recommend MPEG2 on VCD or SVCD. Nero does a great job of burning VCD / SVCD... to do the actual conversion, the Panasonic MPEG encoder is considered by many to produce the best picture. http://www.vcdhelper.com/ is a good site for VCD information (basically a VCD is a DVD on CD-R, obviously with less capacity - they are mainstream in China, but most DVD players will play them).

That should get you started, the rest is too off topic, there are lots of forums dedicated to this stuff!
