Here is an example capture from the a TV program (thru cable TV) for your reference. It was captured at 640X480, non-compressed video, 44-16 audio. I chose a pretty bright scene so it looks better and easier to compress. I recompressed it into 2 files. One, VCD-ready MPEG1. Two, DivX codec AVI. Download from the address below to view.

1) VCD ready MPEG 352X240, 1235K
http://www.geocities.com/chanciusliu/test.mpg

2) DivX codec AVI, 640X480, 30 fps, 1470K
http://www.geocities.com/chanciusliu/test_divx.avi

Overall, image quality isn't something to be proud of (if you don't have Digital TV) but OK for ~$50.

I just got mine tonight, as advertised.

I'm having a little trouble with it right now as after a minute or two of watching tv the picture scrambles some, which I hope is due to the fact that it's sharing an IRQ with my raid controller. and the remote program says 'IR has caused an error in PASHLEXT.DLL', when I try and use the remote. I just did a seach and found pashlext.dll in the directory for powerachiver(a freeware winzip like program) so this may not be that hard to fix. I'm downloading the latest drivers as I type.

The analog picture quality is ok. Not as good as my AIMS videohighway card that this is replacing. Before going defunct AIMS had two drivers for there card, the original drivers and the WDM drivers. This card looks like the WDM drivers, the picture is a little fuzzy and it seems to cause more glitchs in the destop when moving it, or just draging a window in front of it. I have no idea when i will even try to use the digital feature as I have no antenna and don't think there are any HDTV broadcasts around my parts.

Good luck to those waiting, just to let you know I ordered 1 at 3:00AM sunday with ground UPS, got a confirmation email within a few minutes and noticed my CC has the charge on the 27th.

got mine all hooked up...
doesn't want to agree with the system
i have to remove and refresh everytime i startup
to get it to work...

quality is all right on regular cable, but i
have nothing to compare it to...

remember to use the 'primary' program and set your
video card to 'allow overlay' (if it supports it).
my desktop was doing funny refreshes until i did that...

all in all, i still think it's a great deal at $50! : )

Does anyone notice that you can access the pay per view channel in x-ray look with channel manager (whateve it's called) on? My TV usually totally ignore it into blue screen, but I can see it on my computer monitor. Maybe there are programs can descramble it.

To all people who got this deal, please post your captured video somewhere so we can compare and see how well the video capture can be with this card with different configurations (digital cable, antenna, regular cable). I'm especially interested in a sample video from digital cable subscription.

I am not satisfied with the qualify of my feed and video on computer screen. It has too much noise and rather grainy. It's about the same quality as the sample screen capture on their site. BTW, the video I posted was the best I got. (C-SPAN channel appears sharper than other channels on my monitor.) Other videos I got look even worse, probably just half as good. I'd like to know it can reach the image quality like this one on their website.

BTW, when you do full screen, how big is you image. Mine can only go 640X480 with black area surrounding it. It should do better than that according to the manual. My card is a rather old 16MB Voodoo 3 2000.

Thanks, Also big thanks to the original poster of this deal.

My two cards arrived this morning via standard UPS. I ordered
three at around 9pm Saturday morning, had that number reduced to
two on Tuesday, and they arrived today...

Not bad service and a great price...I still wonder if this was a mistake
on J&R's part or not...

CLiu:

you have to run the 'primary' program and set it to 'allow overlay'.
that's what allows it to be viewed full screen - but it's pretty bad
i'll warn you right now! : )

i have satellite cable - i'll see if that looks any better...

How are you guys receiving Digital TV? Did you go out and buy a wire antenna? I live in a dorm and the cable is expensive here and you cannot receive ANY tv. I think they scramble the airwaves. Even when you go to town where there aren't huge concrete buildings, you still cannot get any channels.

Is anyone running this under Windows 2000? The box doesn't
mention Windows 2000, but there are drivers on the Hauppauge
site for Win2k. Does it run OK under Win2k? Do all the utilities
also run properly under Win2K?

RE: Descrambling pay channels.

I was looking into this a couple of weeks ago. There are programs out there that will descramble PAL pay channels (using analog scrambling), but they do not work to well on US tv. i could not get a picture that was not distorted (slanting 20deg to the left or right) and black and white.
Also since most of the development is being done in Europe, most of the software is in german, or bad english. There is rumored to be someone working on an NTSC version, but it won't do me much good as my cable system is going totally digital with pay channels in april.

I dont have the links at hand but i found the original links in the hot deals forum, try searching for free cable ( i do remember it was off topic so search the whole text).

Kwad,
I use it on Win2000 Pro, and it works fine. Not the most stable program on earth. It crashed once when I was enlarging the screen and moved the window around.

future I don't call it anything because this was not a pricing error. This model is DISCONTINUED as in no longer made. They are fufilling all orders without a complaint or mention of a pricing error. JandR could care less for customer service, they are not Amazon.com or Outpost.com so they could have easily rejected the orders.

I think cutting the price to 80% off retail is a bit drastic to move inventory that is discontinued. This card is far from obsolete, and the Hauppauge web store is still selling them (for $299). Even without the HDTV feature, you get a card with stereo sound, and a remote for the price of Hauppauge's bare bones mono version.

JandR cannot discontinue a product because they don't make it. The manufacturer is discontinuing it.
