Video card died need a dx9 card for about 150 bucks.

5900XT, but don't expect outstanding DX9 performance. For best DX9 nowadays go for a 9700Pro or higher Radeon card (not SE).

The 9600XT guys will say the 9600XT is a good card with really good DX9 for its class. The 5900XT guys will say you can spend a little more and get an overall faster card (even though DX9 ain?t so hot). The 9800pro guys will say if you?re close to $200 you might as well spend 20-30 more and get pretty well the best on the market now.

That Sapphire 9600pro at newegg $133 should overclock quite easily to the point where it?s running as fast as a 9600XT if you want to keep the budget low. At 450/330 (from stock 400/300) it will be as fast as a 9600XT.

Before chrismass I was looking for a DX9 card - but they were to expensive for my budget. This group said wait until spring and price on lowend DX9 cards would drop.

Are we still on track for a nice drop in a few months ?

you mean as slow as a 9600xt?

spend the extra $25 for a 5900se/xt, it's a huge difference, especially considering the overclocks you should get. another $25 and you'll get a moderate performance increase w/ a 9800pro in games using ps2 shaders.

If hes going to do that he might as well get a 9700 pro, since DX9 is important to him. Mwave has them for $179.

I think he edited it from $200 - $150. I would not have told him about it, as it is quite beyond his price range...But as it was $200 the 9800 Pro is only $10 bucks more, so I "showed him the light"

you know.. i don't know about that.. it certainly would not be a "bad" way to go.. the cards are pretty much neck and neck... to me would boil down to something as little as what's a few bucks cheaper, what drivers i preferred, and how i felt about mwave (or any other verndor i might purchase from), or even what was bundled with the card. the 9700p would certainly be a decent alternative, but if i were going w/ ati i'd personally spend the extra $20 for the 9800p.

still, none of these cards are "great" at dx9... would be interesting how the next gen $200 parts will perform... it's just a tough time to buy a video cards right now... the new ones are close, yet we still having nothing but rumors/hype regarding actual performance. with no "official" announcements still, given they usually relase nda's and make offical announcements a month or so prior to actual release, it might not be till may/june before we see these cards on retail shelves

Sapphire 9600XT's are really cheap, and from what i have heard from a friend, have the same proformance as the ati's. i would suggest the ATI 9600XT.

I've read quite a few reviews, and I think the two cards are fairly even. (I'm getting deja-vu here. I could've sworn I replied the same way to a similar post of yours only yesterday, but I haven't seen it today.)

They don't get much better than Mwave Reseller Rating. They're right up there with Newegg. I agree, personally I'd go with the 9800 pro but that may be more than he wants to spend. The only thing that really separates the 9700pro and the 5900 is DX9 performance which is why I would recommend the former since that seems to be important to him.

unfortunately, the performance is of the 9600 series is quite disappointing.. i say this from personal experience. the 5900xx, 9700pro, and 9800pro, all of which i own, run circles around the 9600xt and only costs a few bucks more. serioulsy.. pay a couple bucks more, or wait until the next gen stuff comes out, regarless of whether you're a fan of ati or nvidia.

well, perhaps.. and as i said earlier it's not a bad alternative, but if dx9 performance is really that important, waiting a bit might not be bad.. i dunno.. i keep going back to it't just a tuff time to have to buy a video card. none of the cards out right now are that great. we have promise of alot better hardware right around the corner, but no clue other than rumors of what the performance might be, no clue of the pricepoints - no information really to make any comparisons to the cards available today, and frankly, still no DX9 games to speak of.

maybe the best thing if you have to buy something now, is to buy whatever will get you the most resale value when you sell it in a few months to get a capable DX9 part.. but then again, when will we have a 'capable' DX9 game? confusing times, indeed...

Check out the forsale forum. There are at least 3 9700 pros in the $150 to $160 range shipped. I don't think that can be beat.

Hi, Over at NewEgg.com under refurbished, they have several 9700 PRO card for sale. With a 15 day return thing, prices are around $140.00 to $160.00 range. The reason I know this is because, I got one last week, I think I read the same reviews, it's a good card to go with now.

I may be wrong but I think the new hardware that's around the corner, is going to be more then just dropping a card in our current motherboards, I think the motherboard will have to be new to, and so on, and so on.

The card is working great so far, but my 15 days are not up yet.

No, R420 and NV40 should both be available in AGP form. I don't see ATi or nV abandoning AGP before the end of this year, and probably not for a while beyond that.
