Video Card Doubts...

Alright, I purchased an X850 XT from Sapphire. The card is extremely powerful since it's damn near the top of the heap. I'm just wondering should I have gone for a different card instead of it. Games like Splinter Cell look beautiful, but have those graphic glitches that take you out of the game. Farcry is beautiful, but I thought it would look much better. I'm just having my doubts about my card and wondering if I made a good purchase. Will future games look good with it?

When you spend that much money on any single piece of hardware it's normal to have a little remorse. I generally don't buy the top of the line parts because I know they're going to be outdated within 6 month. I built my last machine to play Doom3 and Half-Life 2, HL2 looked great and made it all worth while.

It will certainly have cost a lot but if you game often enough then it's not a bad purchase per se.

I spent a small fortune on my 6800GT when it first came out and I still love it.

You shouldn't own it. You should feel guilty too. Send it to me and I will send you an 8500 ATI to replace it.

enjoy the card and keep it for life(3 to 4 years until something else smokes it)

I do feel guilty, and your right. So in order to appease the evil inside of me I shall destroy the vile graphics card instead...but first I'll play some Farcry...

have you turned on the eye candy? what resolution are you playing at? tinker with it a bit and see how it goes.

Unless you are seeing low fps (<30fps), then all the 6800GTs, Ultras, x800s, x850s will give you gaming experiences that you can distingish.

Oh yeah, I have been bumping up everything and finding a perfect smooth middle ground of punch and performance. It's just that I thought it would look better, but I didn't get as much of a visual blow as I was hoping for. I went from a 9800 Pro to this card.

I just don't think you can honestly call any high end card a "god buy" from a purely bang for buck perspective - the high end has never had price scale with performance.

That aside, most of those extra dollars are going for extra frames. Visual quality will not be affected - you get the same frame that people with an X300 get. Going from a 9800 Pro to that was probably not a huge jump. I upgraded from my GF4 Ti to the 6600GT - a two generation gap, so the difference was VERY noticable.

What kind of system are you using with it? With an x850 I don't think there should be a "middle ground". It should be a "All ahead and damn the torpedoes" kind of thing.

Edit: In other words, you should be able to max everything out and get decent performance. Although FSAA can bring any card to its knees including the ultra high end ones.

AtaruMoroboshi18 after you get bored with the card you can sell it on the open market and only lose ~$100-150. Enjoy a killer graphics card then move on!

In theory, the visual blow is no more than 0%.

I just picked up a ATI X850XT at Best Buy for $350.00 at bestbuy $400.00 with $50.00 rebate and a 20% off digital coupon whatever that is.

I bought it because I thought it was a pricing error, considering what I paid for my 6800GT BFG.

Enjoy it now and stop worrying about it

actually you did VERY wrong.

FUTURE games will run like crap . . .

Send it to me.

j/k'ing

it is fine

edit:

seriously, What did you expect . . . the x800 series is no more "advanced" than the 9800p - just FASTer - much faster.

The glitches in SC are probably game bugs . . . . FC will just run "smoother" at a higher FPS and with more AA/AF [as long as it is patch v1.3].

IF you wanted to "see" more, you would have needed a nVidia card - a current 6800 card or the next gen ati r520.
