Video card for PVR?

Just wondering what your suggestions would be for a video card for my PVR system.

I'm not going to be playing ANY games on this thing, just a file-server and PVR. So S-Video out is a must.

Since I'm running a linux box, I'm thinking I'll go with and nVidia card.

Geforce 4 or 5xxx series?

I'm waiting for your suggestions...

Also - give me specific brands that are trustworthy.

Yeah... but the new FX5200s are only like $40 on newegg.

Well... the obvious choices would be the FX5200 or RADEON 9200 in AGP, or the GeForce 6200 or RADEON X300 in PCIe. I suppose you could get a GF4MX or a RADEON 7000, but it seems like for a few bucks more you could invest in something not already completely outdated.

If you step up a little bit to a RADEON 95XX/96XX, you can get the ATI component output adapter for about $30, in case you ever get an HDTV. Many of them are also fanless at stock. Of course, you would have to balance this against NVIDIA's generally better Linux support. I'm not sure it would be a huge deal if you're not playing games.

In terms of 3D performance, maybe... which is irrelevant if he's not using it for gaming. A big, hot, noisy GF4Ti4600 is hardly 'better' than a passively cooled FX5200 in a PVR setup.

Also, the GF4MX is worse than the FX5200 (except for maybe a 64-bit FX5200... shudder).
