Hello all,
I'm currently using a Geforce 6600 gt from Gigabyte (GV-NX66T128D) anyway my question is how much heat can my video cards withstand? Right now it's running at 60 degree C is that too hot? What is normal?

Thank you for all of your replies

thats under load for sure , the x800xt cranks up to 71 degs in summer here in queensland, l put crazy 9000 rpm fans on it to keep it at 61 --63, runs with no artifacts at core 533 and mem 555 stock its 500 / 500, so its a touch overclocked, but perfect , its a warm ah heck, but l have 2 pro s and an xt one pro is bios and hard wire modded to an xtpe it runs at 68 deg cant stop it even with monster fans, 60 seems ok if its workin its butt off at that temp, and l cant see any reason why it would get that hot not under load so, usually for a video card to crank up like that its running megga heavy open gl program , or it s running almost any 3d program, then the GPU gets cranked up and....heat , its a cpu at its core and there like little p2 s or p3 s really, on a card ! l wouldnt stress to much if your worried look at your overall tower box air flow and make sure the high pressure area [ fan inlets ] is below the video card, l always try to get air flowing from back of tower to front, l have 9 fans, 5 inlet, 4 outlet, 3 of the inlet fans are below vid card giving it a mass of cool air to suck over video card AND cpu, the air then tends to pass the RAM , bonus, passed the hard disc, and in my case out the front via a hidden vent below cd rom. Lt comes out WARM even now in winter so its displacing alot of heat energy, keeping it all cool is just as important if you run demending 3d games like hl2 or bf2 doom 3 etc etc, keep the RAM cool too.

Curious topic. I was wondering also.

Running 7800GTX - I know it's new, and not enough data yet.

It gets to around 70 under load. Should I be freaking out (everything's stock, no OC)

Anybody know the upper temp for the card?

60 degrees C is fine for a video card and nothing to get excited about. My 6800GT has it's default shut-off temp set to 120 degrees C from the factory. That means that the card can actually tolerate a few more degrees of heat before it gets damaged. Idle temps around 60 degrees C and load temps around 80-85 degrees are well within Nvidia's operating limits.

One other thing. My first 6800GT was a Gigabyte card. I've got an e-mail from Gigabyte's tech support stating that the normal operating temps for the 6800GT are idle: 45-55C
running: 60-80C

That's straight from Gigabyte. Of course, that's the 6800GT they were referring too but, I'd have to assume the 6600GT would have similar operating specs.

My x800xl was at 74C. I had it for 3 months, played games...and eventually got artifacting. The connect3D people tell me that 74C is ok for the x800xl and that it was just one of those bad cards that I got. So do you guys think it was the temps or just a bad card? Cuz I don't overclock...not yet...

Nope. I think it was just a bad card. 74C is fine for these video cards and isn't even close to the failure threshold.

I've been wondering the same thing. I've got a Chaintech 6600GT and its idle is around 55C and load is 75-80C (default for shutdown is 145C). The thing that freaks me out is that this is my second card. My first one died after 2 days of gaming. I have no idea what happened but I think it may or may not have been related to the heat. I saw no artifacts prior to the crash so I'm not sure what it was. But I find myself stopping after an hour of gaming to check on my temps now. I don't do any OCing either.

But if it was heat that fried my first card, shouldn't I have seen artifacts or something? It literally died right in the middle of playing Painkiller.

Those temperatures are fine even if it is idle. My 6600GT runs at that and it is fine. Underload it goes to about 80 but even that is well within Nvidia's operating limits. If you want it to be cooler, you could always try water cooling or slapping a zalman on it.
