video card keeps resetting during gameplay

In Doom3, every few minutes (especially when going through some doors that changes the scene) the screen freezes up and tells me that "the VPU has reset your video card" or something like that. I've got a x800xt and running doom at HQ settings @ 1600x1200. I've tried turning the 'overdrive' feature on and off but doesn't seem to make a difference. It says the card is running @ 50C, is that too hot - could it be causing the freeze ups?

i've gotten that quite a few times with my cousin's 9800 pro. it says the exact thing. this was occured after installing the latest catalyst drivers. try rolling back to something more previous and see if that helps.

500w fortron blue storm

(just noticed the video card is now running @ 60C while surfing the net and it just froze up on me and gave me the whole 'vpu recovery has reset your card' thing again... except I'm not playing D3, just running my web browser.)

going to try re installing the drivers off the disc now and see if that helps

system specs:

AMD 3400+
DFI NF3 250GB
1GB OCZ Rev.2
Powercolor x800xt
Fortron 500w
NEC 3520 DVDR
160GB Seagate
WXP home

(I've also got a hauppauge pvr350 tuner card in one of the pci slots - don't know if that could affect anything.)

ok reinstalled the disc drivers. wierd thing is that the 'adapter info' reads the chip type as radeon x800 LE agp. I noticed the newer drivers off the ati site read as x800XT which is correct... dont' know what LE means, but I guess it doesn't matter (?) as long as the game stops freezing. we'll see...

Well, doesn't seem to have worked... at least not exactly... not getting the vpu recover message thing, but the game in general is basically unplayable now. Instead of it locking up and resetting itself, now the screen just freezes totally with the sounds running in the background for a few seconds until the sound just studders/gets locked and I have to switch off the power to the PC because the whole thing is completely locked up.

I have't played PC games for a while but I don't remember Quake doing any of this stuff... of course that was on my old Dell. Either these glitches are just a part of modern games and I'm not aware of it, I screwed up the build somehow, or I purchsed unstable/incompatible components. jeez.

Anyway, going to go back to the latest catalyst drivers and fire up HL2 to see if I can at least play that game. (would be nice after spending all this dough):disgust:

Hi, it is most likely that the hsf is not making good contact with the core. You will want to take off the hsf and do alittle sanding to clear a couple areas.

I had a 9700 Pro that did the same thing and after I fixed it to where the hsf was making proper contact I never had a single problem and it oced very good.

I would try what I said above

Ever notice technology has a mind of its own?

I loaded up the new drivers (the same I had before), put all settings exactly the same as they were before, put Doom3 back up and... it plays perfect, no problems whatsoever. I don't know if it was just the beginning section of the game that was bad somehow, or if it's just technology doing its thing, but it works for now so I'll take it.

Thanks to everyone for their help
