Video Card or More Memory???

This is the question I am currently asking myself........

.....I'm planning to build a high speced pc for use with high end graphics (IE Adobe photoshop and Quark Express) plus the odd game or two. The problem is I can not get a straight answer on whether I should chose a T.O.T.L video card (GTS Ultra?) or spend the extra cash on more memory??

Can anyone answer my question and advise which video card I should choose???

PS I plan to get an AMD Thunderbird 1ghz....would the MSI motherboard be the best choice coz of the stability or should I go for the speed of the ABIT?????

Memory is cheap right now. Seems like a pretty big bang for the buck.

How much memory do you already plan to put in the system?....If its under 64 or 128, then get more...

I guess it depends on how much ram you have now. If your under 128mg get more RAM. If you have 128 get the Ultra. I don't have any experiance with professinal 3D apps, but if your running Win98SE, I've found anything over 128mg is a waste.

I was planning to put in 256MB....maybe even PC150 if I can find it!!

It's gonna be a whole new system so general advice would be much appreciated.

I'd rather have 256MB of memory than a GTS Ultra. IMO, the Ultra is too overpriced for whatever gains it brings. Also, the ABIT KT7 and MSI K7T Pro/Pro2 are about the same in performance.

If you are willing to wait a few months, you may want to get a DDR board.

The GTS Ultra is an over priced overclock of the GTS. Get your own then overclock. Go for more RAM

I was running 128mb with 98 SE. I upped it to 256mb and saw smoother operations when working with images (scanning, editing).

I'll have to admit...
I may be experiencing "overkill" now at 384mb. But It's SO CHEAP!

If you haven't already considered it, get win2000 with 256mb of ram. It will be much better that win9x for professional applications.

Dwm696, for the PC-150 go to Mushkin.com. As for the Ultra, I'm pretty tempted by it myself, but it's also $450-$500.

for video and photo editing id go with 512 megs of ram and a gf2 gts 64 meg version. In photo and video editing you will find that the ammount of ram will effect preformance more then the diffrence between and ultra and a gts. Ram is key to your proposed use.

RAM is the best thing ever. You can never have too much!!! Especially me, since I build a LOT of machines, so when ever I need some, I just grab it out of one of my other systems. And I love stocking up on it when the price is low... Time to stock again...
