Video card problems - need help!

I have an elsa gladiac ultra (GF2 Ultra 64MB) that just started to hang the system whenever I go into any DirectX game. I tried forcing a low refresh rate using DXDIAG but that turned out NOT to be the problem.

I verified and reinstalled with proper drivers that worked previously.

I even reinstalled DX8.1 but no go.

My question is: Has anyone else experienced this type of problem? Also, it is possible for the 3D engine of the card to go bad, while your 2D/Windows apps work perfectly?

Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated!

Have you tried any OpenGL games? If the 3d there works fine, then it obviously is a directx problem, and nothing with the card.

Can you post some system specs? And how long has this been doing this?

Perhaps you downloaded some virus, or installed some hardware that has conflicts? Anything of that sort you have installed?

Tried Half-Life in OpenGL mode and it had the same symptoms.

It just started happening over the weekend. I had installed no new drivers or software. My systems specs are as follows:

Asus A7V133 mobo
T-bird 1 Ghz
Elsa Gladiac Ultra 64mb (GF2U)
Win98SE
DX 8.1 runtime

Also worth mentioning: PC was powered down between last successful use and first sign of problem. That is why this is so weird!

Uninstall Direct X8 to 7 and change your driver to 1470
