video card question

I know the general rule of buying hardware is Just Do It and don't bother waiting for the next greatest thing, but here's my dilemma...

I am building a new system from scratch (my first one ever).

Gigabyte ga-k8n pro-sli
amd x2 3800+ dual core
2gb d400 memory
2 sata 3.0 250 or 300 gig HD's

So for video, should I just get a 7800gt and stay with it, or get a 6800gs for about $100 less and upgrade later? I heard Vista and dx10 is coming at the end of this year, but how much is that in stone? If I get the 7800 I will probably keep that for a few years at least, so how much will dx10 be used at first to make it worth getting a dx10 card and os?

As far as dx10 goes I would expect that it will take a while after vista's release before many games use it (a year?) and even longer before dx9 and dx10 paths are very different.

Just because you need Vista to play it doesnt mean you need a DX10 card to play it.

I would go ahead and upgrade now, since I dont think DX10 cards will be out till maybe later this year or early next year.

Dude, it's just halo2. It's been out for the xbox forever. Takes about a day or two to beat. Just rent an xbox if you wanna experience it.

Hardly worth the whole DRM mess of Vista to upgrade just for that one game.

I would buy a 7800GT over the 6800GS, it could easily be less than a $100 difference, and a pretty huge jump at higher resolutions.

EDIT: especially since the eVGA 7800GTs are overclocked almost 20% on the core and 10% on the memory.

I'm probably going to go with the 7800. But just cause I am means that in about 6 months all these totally amazing dx10 games are going to come out early just to spite me.

There are games still coming out that support DirectX 8.

Until a reliable release schedule from Microsoft, ATI, NVIDIA and major game developers comes out, I would not worry about it.

ARe you going to upgrade in the next two years? If yes, it will not matter.

There will probably be 3 games max coming out that support DX10 given that microsoft is rumoured to release Vista on December 1st or November 30th. That's too long to wait imo. You can always sell the card later and enjoy better performance now. The general trend historically has always been that you need at least 1 generation after DX introduction to enjoy that level of DX gaming.
