Video card question

I am looking for a video card for my Linux box. I just want the best 2D image quality and for the card to have a DVI. I will not be playing any hardcore games like MOA or Unreal.

Any suggestions?

as the others said, Matrox will have the best 2D and I hear their Linux support is better than NVIDIA's and ATI's.

Radeon 7500 or 8500 with dvi. Cheap and good. I think the R7500 can be had for $60 or so.

Get an 8500LE. Great 2D, runs fine in linux. DVI Included.

Matrox 2D is outstanding, going from my G450 to a GF3 and later to a GF4 was a huge step down in image quality.

Unfortunately the G450 is a wee bit slow for 3D gaming on a 19" monitor.

An also, Matrox has a pretty well established driver set for Linux.

If you're going with DVI, does Matrox or ATi still have a distinct advantage over Nvidia?

I believe the Nvidia image quality issue was average RF-filters in the reference design. Some hackers went so far as to modify their PCBs to route around the quality-degrading filters.

With DVI, 2D quality should be less of an issue, and nVidia have the best Linux drivers.

The only potential donwside to nVidia's drivers are that they're closed source, so you'll end up with a tainted kernel.
But unless you're into the politics of OSS vs the world, that shouldn't be an issue.
