Hi,

Can somebody recommend a few video cards that would suffice for the folliwng requirements: Around/Under $150 (cheaper is better though), it's going to be used in Windows XP on a Dual AMD XP workstation, and I want it to be able to play Battlefield 1942, and some of the more recent games decently. Does not have to be jaw dropping framerates. I was thinking possibly a Geforce 4 variant. I would rather stick with an Nvidia based card but I've herad a little about Radeon cards, but I'm not all too sure about their compatiblity. I don't want to have any driver problems or compatibility issues. I've been out of the video card market for a while so I'm not really up to date on what is available or best. Thanks.

You can get Ti4200 128MB for around $120 shipped in most places. Or a 4400 at around your limit. If you trust the FS/FT forum then you can even them for even lower prices.

Is this better than the radeon 8500?

ati radeon's compatibilty and driver issues has gotten a lot better in the last year.

if you can stretch that wallet a little bit more, i would recommend the sapphire radeon 9500 128MB(red pcb) card for $160 shipped at newegg.
or the 64MB version for $137 shipped.

this is a card for the future.

well if you want a great cheap video card go with a radion 9000pro 128ddr. This vidio card does a good job of running preaty much every thing out there and it isent har to find for 70 bucks or less. I got mine for $55. Great card for the money.

out of these two I would go for the 64mb....the ram is usually faster, no?

I think this idea is good too....it would still be fast enough for your needs and would leave you with $80 or more to spend elsewhere.

I would recommend a GF4 Ti-4200 with 64 meg memory. There are mulitple deals right now to get them for $79 AR (translates to about $90 after tax/shipping). I picked one up at CompUSA a couple weeks ago and it really works well. As far as I can tell, it is the price/performance leader at this point. However, as both ATI and NVidia are starting to ship their newest boards, the rest of the lineup will start to fall in price quickly.

Radeon 9500 pro !! The pro is much better manufacturing quality wise, faster, and not much more.

The Radeon 9600 Pro will be out shortly and and will cheaper to manufacture than the 9500 Pro. Hopefully, this will make for a cheaper video card with performance similar to the 9500 Pro.

BTW a Radeon 9500 Pro smokes a GeForce 4 TI4200.
