Video Card Suggestions

I'm building a new PC for a friend of mine and I can't decide if I should get him a cheap video card (<$50) or sell him mine (GF4-Ti4200) and get myself a new one. I don't want to spend much ($150-$175). Any suggestions?

im with shady on that. that is, if you want/need a better card. ill keep my 4200 for a while, i dont see any games coming out im interested in that needs much more than that

Same, 9700 PRO will be around $180.00, 5900 is going to be higher, and I'm not sure why, just because its newer but not much more faster, also look at 5700

5900XT > 9700 Pro, unless you need ATI for some reason. The XTs are $175-$185.

What games do you play, at what resolution, and with what CPU? You can't go wrong with a 5900XT or 9700 Pro or higher, and most heavy gamers here will probably recommend you buy nothing less, but the real question is whether a high-end card is worth it for you.

Edit: Todd33, is your advice that "5900XT > 9700 Pro" based on personal experience? Because most benchmarks seem to indicate otherwise--at least, as far as I've read (which has been too much). I think it's safer to say each card has its strengths, depending on the games you play and the filtering settings you prefer.

OK, here's the rest of the story. I am building myself a new PC and building my friend a PC with my leftovers and some new stuff.

My new PC will have;
Abit NF7-S
XP 2500 Mobile
1GB Mushkin PC3500 Level One Dual Pack


His PC will have;
Soltek KT333 MB
AMD XP 2000
512 MB PC2700

The video card that I have is a Gainward (650?) Golden Sample Ti4200.

Both machines will be used for gaming.

BTW, my experience with ATI is that they must have a team of monkeys write their drivers, because calling them terrible is an insult to other terrible drivers!!
