As the title states, i'm looking for a VC that will run games with no problems on a 20 inch LCD monitor running at 1600X1200. I'd prefer a nvidia card. Is a GTX 275 overkill for this application? Thanks in advance.
It depends on what games you play and what the rest of your system is like, but in all likelihood at that resolution you would find few games that really struggle with a GTX260, so yes, the GTX275 is slight overkill.
You may also want to consider the HD4870, but both are pretty good value right now.
That resolution is larger than 1680x1050, so no, GTX 275 would not be overkill normally. But Minas is right that it would be nice to know the rest of your system, and even what games you planning to play. The GTX 260 has a bit better price to performance ratio though. But if you want that extra 12-15% performance increase it might be worth it for the extra longevity from improved performance (though neither card supports DX11, fyi).
I'm looking to build a new P55 system around a core i5 CPU. Are there any cards in the price range of the GTX 275 that will support DX11? As for what games I'd be playing...WoW and first person shooterss come to mind.
If you want DX11 support you're limited to a Radeon 5770 for $159 (should be fast enough but would be slower than a GTX275, more in line with a GTX260 or Radeon 4870) or a Radeon 5850 for $259 (faster than a GTX285) (there's also the 5750 for $129 and the 5870 for $379). Unfortunately there currently is no DX11 part to fill in that gap from $159 to $259.
