Yeah HDMI can be converted to DVI-D with no video signal loss, if you're coming from a device that outputs it's video over HDMI. If you had an HDTV cable box for example, and it had HDMI, component, S-Video, and Composite video outputs, the best solution for a monitor would be HDMI/DVI/VGA coming off the HDMI port through the use of converters. Component comes next in quality. S-Video and composite come next in that order but can't display HD signals anyways... avoid. Use HDMI over DVI-D, DVI-D over VGA etc, depending on what your monitor/TV had as inputs.
