video crashing

I have the following machine:

Abit BH6
300 watt ATX power supply
P3 500
GeForce2 GTS 64 mb ram (ELSA)
Linksys LNE100TX
SoundBlaster Live! Value
384 mb RAM

I am experiencing strange problems. I just recently converted this machine from Linux to W2k in order to play games. After experiencing some problems I installed Win98 to see if that solved it, but had the same problem. That problem is as follows...
Whenever I try to do something that uses the video heavily (games, 3DMark2001, etc) it will work for a few minutes, then the machine will freeze up and the monitor will "turn off" as if it went into power saving mode. The time it takes this to happen varies greatly, and it doesn't matter what type of game or video application. The machine will run SETI@Home and SiSoft Sandra Burn-In just fine for days and days, but the first time I start up video stuff it crashes. Any ideas?

Hmmm did you check you`ve disabled all Video shadowing in Bios and disabled system bios cacheable and disable fastwrites in bios(if listed),also try 64mb for AGP size in bios or even 128mb, it`s also possible it could be power problem so is your 300w generic type?

Also check Irq`s and leave PCI slot one empty, the Video card should not be sharing with anything else.

You did do a clean install of Win98 if you did not then reformat and reinstall Win98.

I did do a clean install...I don't believe in "upgrades" from one OS to another.
All my cards are on separate IRQs (Video = 11, NIC = 9, and Sound = 5). PCI 1 is empty, the other cards are in PCI 2 and PCI 4.
My AGP aperature size is 64 mb.

I believe I actually have both Video Bios and System Bios shadowed...that may be the problem. I don't have an option for FastWrites if I remember correctly.

My PS is generic, but it's never given me a problem under Linux running VCDs or games (Quake, Tron, etc).

I'll try changing the shadowing options when I get home. Thanks for the info.

Are you using the 23.11 drivers from Nvidia? If you are, then that might be your problem. You might be getting this 'infinite loop' error.

My Bh6 config was 100% stable in 2d and 3d, I installed 23.11's and experienced major lockups in every game. I've since tried every driver out there and every so-called fix on the net and nothing has worked. My computer locks up (randomly) in every 3d game but 2d is rock solid.

Here's some reading material:

Article on "infinite loop error" (nv4_disp.dll)

Thread on AT

I started with the 23.11 drivers, but then dropped back to 22.81, and then the orginal 21.xx ones...hell, I even tried the old 12.xx ones and the actual driver from ELSA (maker of card). Same problem with all drivers.

I have the same problem with my BH-6 based system. My first thought was pulling the recently installed Promise ATA-100 controller. No luck. I did a fresh install of Windows XP, no luck. Various memory sticks, no luck. I called Intel and blamed it on their processor, they sent me a new one (with very excellent promptness even though I didn't even have a receipt for the processor), no luck. I am expecting a new Epox MB from CompGeeks Friday. Hopefully this will solve the problem. I haven't tried the BIOS setting changes that were listed in this thread. I will try those when I get home, however the problem seemed to start suddenly, and I haven't changed the BIOS settings in a while. I think the BH-6s are just getting kinda' old, God rest their souls.

My computer was doing the EXACT same thing with my new Radeon 8500 (OEM). I tried everything to fix it- WHQL drivers, beta drivers, turning off shadowing. Nothing helped. I finally wrote to ATI and they gave me alist of things to try. What finally solved the problem was turning OFF AGP4x mode. There were other problems with the Radeon as well, Microsoft Flight Sim 2002 won't work right using this card (known problem- see ATI's web site) plus other 3D intensive games would freeze up or have weird artifacts so I finally just sent the Radeon back and have purchased a Gainward GeForce 3 Ti500 (on backorder, should be here in 2 weeks). I figure that NVidia, with thier better driver support, will be more compatible (I hope!). I know the Radeon is probably a better card, but if it won't work then it does me no good!
