Recently I've been getting some problems with 3d distortions when running any sort of 3d accelerated game. It'll get some odd flickery artifacting and have things that look like long spikes or tears running out from stuff. It's prevelent sometimes in games like World of Warcraft, but shows up a lot more in more intensive games with Command & Conquer 3 or Neverwinter Nights 2.
At first I thought it was my video card, I have a 7900GT, but after running NVidia's temp monitor while running the games, it only spiked up to high 60s low 70s. I had my computer sitting inside an enclosure in my desk, but have since then moved it to outside the desk to get more are flow, but the problem is still persisting. It mostly goes away if I leave the side off and have a fan blowing on it.
My hard drives seem to be getting quite warm, but I dont know if them overheating would cause a problem like this. It only happens when things that are 3d intensive are running, but I seem to have ruled out the video card. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm going to pick up more case fans tomorrow, but if it's still giving me problems with a desk fan blowing directly into it, I dont know how much more air flow through the case could help.
Edit:
Could an overheating northbridge have anything to do with it? Just last night the fan covering the northbridge controller started stopping completely for short amounts of time and making a lovely squeekng noise
Doesn't the northbridge handle coms between cpu & memory? That'd explain why the computer only really tweaks out while doing 3d stuff under load.
