Video/DVD playback problems

I just finished putting together my first computer last week and have been able to get everything to run properly. The biggest problem I've had is that whenever I try to play a DVD, the quality is not what it was on my k6-2 333mhz computer, and it skips continuously. I have a Thunderbird 900 processor with the MSI k7tpro2-a motherboard and a GeForce 32mb DDR video card, so I know it shouldn't skip like it is. My DVD player is an old one I pulled from my old computer and is only about 4x speed, but I don't think that is the problem because even when I play games, I get a considerable amount of skipping, even when there isn't much activity going on. I don't have any fps numbers because I don't know what I need to do to get them.

Originally, I installed everything that was on the driver cd that came with the video card, but the next time I rebooted, Windows would load and then my monitor would turn off. Then I installed Windows and only installed the drivers and the control panel program, but that program won't even work for me. When I load it, I get a fatal error and it shuts down.

Does anyone have any idea what I might need to do to get it working properly? The rest of the specs are in my computer profile

I have gone through and changed some BIOS memory settings around a bit and that has helped quite a bit, but I'm still not getting the quality DVD playback that I know I should be.

do you have the DMA mode anabled? Its in the device manager. And also what os, how is it hooked up secondary master, slave

Yup, defintly check DMA, have you tried using a differnet dvd player and enabled hardware acceleration.

I am running the DVD player off of my promise Ultra66 card as master. I went to make sure DMA transfer is enabled, but it is not even an option. I also have an older CD rom and the CDR I was wondering if I could enable the DMA transfer without a problem (read what types of devices are generally not capable of running with DMA?). I am running Windows ME primarily, and the only option I can find dealing with the hardware acceleration is Hardware Motion compensation in the WinDVD properties menu. Can I pick up a trial version of the Power DVD 3 anywhere?

One other question, I installed my promise Ultra66 card the other day and the Ultra66 cable that came with it looked identical to the one that I assumed to be an ultra100 cable with my MSI motherboard. Are there any noticeable differences in the two types of cables for future references?
