Hey all,

I am looking to build a PC for my employee to do some video editing work. They will probably be doing around 6 hours of video editing a day in Premiere (mostly simple stuff, like cutting out parts we don't need, etc) and am looking to build a relatively cost effective PC that "gets the job done" without being top of the line, but at the same time not annoyingly slow for a video editor.

Any suggestions would be welcome including the amount of RAM, type of GPU, CPU, etc. I will likely be putting a 500gb SSD for working with new content and 3 spinners in RAID 5 for backup (supplemented by dropbox backup.) I am assuming a 750-850W PSU would be sufficient for this machine even if I were to do upgrades in the future (please correct me if I'm wrong).

I would like to keep the budget to about $1,000 USD or less (not including hard drives) if possible.

Thank you in advance

actually, that's not a bad deal.

entropy, do you need to render say, Maya, or do you just need to make youtube videos? Are we talking 3d models, or 2d?

Normal video editing does not take a supercomputer; and if you actually *did* need to do 3d rendering, you would probably know what PC you need, so i'm guessing you need to do basic video editing, like say, minecraft videos, or such, but not much more complicated than that.

For that, even a midrange PC would do.

Now, $1k is enough for a nice build; the Acer burpo recommended might be even more convenient for you, as it comes with warranty. (self-built PCs have individual warranties on the parts, but you have to do your own troubleshooting).

If you do want to build your own editing machine, here is a buy list (and no, you don't need 750w, times have changed).
You can include a video card if you want; this will also allow you to play games, AND it might help the rendering, as some software support hardware encoding and such.

PCPartPicker part list: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/WF3rVY
Price breakdown by merchant: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/WF3rVY/by_merchant/

CPU: Intel Core i5-6600K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($238.99 @ SuperBiiz)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($24.88 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z170X-UD3 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($112.98 @ Newegg)
Memory: G.Skill TridentZ Series 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR4-3000 Memory ($162.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Sandisk X400 1TB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($247.07 @ Amazon)
Case: Fractal Design Define R4 (Black Pearl) ATX Mid Tower Case ($74.99 @ NCIX US)
Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 650W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($77.99 @ SuperBiiz)

Optical Drive: LG WH14NS40 Blu-Ray/DVD/CD Writer ($46.85 @ OutletPC)

Total: $986.74

this is a generic machine; you could instead, for example, build a Xeon based pc, slightly more expensive on the CPU, but six cores. Or there are other Skylake, 6 core solutions.

the 1 Tb SSD is nice, but, you don't necessarily need it.

you could also go cheaper, with a non-Z motherboard, and a non-K cpu, and the stock cooler. between the three, its a decent saving.
if you actually need more than 32Gb of ram, just buy another set, these are 2x16Gb sticks.
cheaper PSUs are also available, the power draw of this machine is really tiny.

I think the Acer fits his needs better.. i7-6700 (8 threads), w/16gb ram, and the GTX 745 has 384 CUDA cores for GPU rendering. 2Tb of storage w/SSD boot drive, optical drive, card reader & licensed Windows at a price you can live with.. It's not ugly and comes as a system w/keyboard, mouse & warranty. Hard to beat it for his purposes.
